there are many reasons why this is stupid, and even hateful; some are philosophical and some are very concrete.

but the simplest is that there are somewhere between 225 and 250 million guns in the u.s. how the fuck do you confiscate that?

if nothing else i do feel this kind of behavior reinforces my assumption that both sides are essentially the same, and have no problems auctioning off fundamental liberties so long as the right boot is on the right foot.

Seems to me that every argument against private gun ownership also applies perfectly to a standing military. (Its exclusive purpose is to kill, it can be useful for self defense but is also used to kill innocent people on a regular basis, what happens when THE CRAZIES! get ahold of it?, etc.) I suppose you could draw the line at regulatory ability--who would regulate armies? The UN? Ha. But then, I'd think the US government would have even more trouble with guns, if only for that 250 million number.

not hard, exactly, but fun. at least in the face of inevitable. or partially inevitable, since gun control is no longer the democrat base-mover it once was - gun ownership is rather widespread along all lines of party affiliation, and actually higher as you go up in income levels rather than lower, for obvious reasons. (guns are an expensive hobby)

the similarities do not end there: "objectively pro-saddam" is fairly interchangeable with "right wing christian gun nut" in terms of intended insult; i don't know if there's a specific linguistic term for something meant to insult someone else, so i'll stick with "ad hominem wrapped in a poisoning the well fallacy" which is accurate, if too long.

tap that ass, indeed. (i don't know if anyone remembers luvcraft and his hilarious bumper stickers from the days before the fall at ic, so this joke may be wasted. i still maintain that a slightly sexist and undeniably vague political slogan is not going to motivate democrats, much less the apathetic; though "kick that ass" might be a decent republican bumper sticker since it sits firmly at the 8th grade emotional level so important for all political thinking.)

the one meme that ruins things for me is the elevation of victimhood - coulter's "under attack" or moore is "under attack" or random boring artist who makes a jesus jerking off out of cheez whiz is "under attack" when none of these people are actually under attack, much less being censored. they're actually making crazy bank from all the "under attack" they get. even ward churchill is doing well for himself, fabricated pedigree and all. despite the supposed bulwark of gun toting right wing christian nutjobs - or for that matter terrorist sympathizing surrender traitors - being an outre artist picking on western religion (sans islam* - ok just christianity) is an incredibly safe profession. for coulter, that's doubly so, though it is both har har funny and utterly unsurprising that thinly veiled sexual violence would be invoked against her as a primary criticism (as is the whole "adam's apple" thing, a common if somewhat odd trope)

there is something about singular obsessions that make people who have them kind of boring, be it video games or euro trance or peeing on people or big L libertarians or whatever, they either interact with people who defer to their madness, share their madness or they spend their times in basements and one room apartments complaining about how much better they are than everyone else.

which reminds me of something very mean and funny i said at a party last year. one of the couples who came were "into kink" (which described about 60% of this crew regardless, maybe more) but haven't quite come to the stage of realization that not everyone really gives a shit and sometimes we like to talk about things other than our sex lives. seeing as they're in their 40s, well, hey, i'm glad you need props for everything you do in life and all but you can be weird, queer, outre and perhaps even "BOLD" and still completely fucking tedious assholes with no sense of how to have a proper conversation.

the only really good thing about it is the really snotty more hardcore than thou types who infest every scene (competition is our nature) because watching people who are battling it out over a status symbol you don't understand is absolutely fascinating.
