have you played the crossroads games? they're not really in the vein of robotron - they're closer to wizard of wor. but the enemies all interact with each other in interesting ways.

How's your crossroads remake coming along?

it's not, but my robotron clone is coming along at a decent crawl.

i just got an email from bizarre creations, though. this thread apparently infringes on their intellectual property and will have to be shut down. it's been real though!

bizarre creations, creators of geometry wars, asked mark incitti, creator of grid wars, to remove his game from the internet for being too similiar to theirs. the common criticism of this being that all the elements of their game is a clone of robotron.

they havn't actually emailed me about this thread. i was making that up.

Is your Robotron Clone going to have non-combatants who you have to rescue? Because that shit is important.

Ok, so I've gotten pretty far in the remake of GBR. The one problem I'm worried about is that I'm not sure how it will run on other people's computers. If anyone would like to see a work in progress:

The original:

The new version:

I changed an important game mechanic. If you tap shift (action button 1) while overlapping an enemy, you will knife them. But touching an enemy will alert them to you and they will attack soon (exclamation points ala MGS). This makes enemies like the dog more vicious because upon a succesful attack he will repeat. So make sure to let go of shift for strafing and use it for melee combat.

Also, you can't die.

And it's pretty hard.

So, these games are pretty addictive, just so you know.

I posted about Robotron clones in the art forum because I wanted to hear people's thoughts before I pushed forward with my game. (I'm actually considering totally redoing it, but... well... I'm not sure)

Hopefully that download works. This is a really early demo just so I can get feedback on how it feels.

The controls are:

Shift to strafe, pick up items, diffuse bombs, and stab enemies (depending on the context)

Ctrl to shoot

Everyday Shooter I think counts as a robotron clone, and might be the best thing ever.

Did someone say that most XBLA games control like robotron?

I played a bunch of Robotron clones when I was checking out what was on Xbox Live Arcade. I can't really remember the names, but I remember thinking they all missed the point a little by leaving out the humans you have to rescue. The humans add so much to how you have to play- it means you have to sometimes weave in and out of the enemies a little to get the humans, because if you just blasted all the enemies surrounding them you might kill them by mistake. The humans create a lot of situations. It's a shame most Robotron-derived games leave them out really.

Jeff Minter did one called Llamatron which is probably worth checking out.

The revival of this thread made me reread its history, and I just gotta wonder...
I agree with the general sentiment that "rescuing humanoids" rather than just saving your own skin is a crucial addition to the genre... Defender is another fine example of that. BUT... weren't the humans in Robotron immune to your bullets? Which didn't prevent the player from having to make some difficult tactical choices, but I don't think that was one of 'em.

Powerups do essentially the same thing as the humans in Robotron, except, they power you up (giving you more incentive to pick them up).

yeah, but they don't have that fun moral ambiguity and guilt factor.

Plus, some of them don't wander around on their own.
