soda.

pop is a synonym for punch, as in "she wouldn't shut the fuck up, so i gave her a pop in the jaw" or "i'd like to pop guliani in the fucking grill."

I don't know: I've never tried Mountain Dew. But from little Americana I glimpse from the Internet and TV, it seems that Mountain Dew is fairly popular. Irn-Bru is huge in Scotland (By law, McDonalds has to serve it other there, so I'm told) and apparently, also in Russia, and quite a staple in England. I still have a hard time finding it over here, but still.

Also, its flavour is somewhat difficult to define. It's not citrus or cola based.

Its slogan is "Made in Scotland from girders", and that is awesome.

It's fairly interesting to read up on, actually.

so it is mountain dew!

mountain dew is good if you're really hungry and haven't eaten in three days and want to drink something to offset bad pizza from the fulton mall, but the only reasonable soda to drink is ginger beer.

In Tennessee, everything is Coke. I say "soft drinks." I also don't drink them anymore.

Pop is midwestern but not in Milwaukee where there is a pocket of Soda resistance holding out.

Pop

Well, it use to be, but it's been driven out of me because people actually hate it when you say this. If you say it in the south at the wrong restraunt they won't have any idea what the fuck you're talking about. so now I say soda

Soda. Although I'm from "hella" country, so there you go.

Irn-Bru has some similarities to Mountain Dew; it's a lot better though. It definitely has an odd "metallic orange" taste to it and is significantly less sweet than Dew. I enjoyed it a lot and have actually researched getting ahold of it in the states.

It's also ridiculously hard to get good ginger beer here. The best you can do is Bundaberg, which is an Aussie ginger beer that you can find at Beverages and More. I still wish you could get Old Jamaica or the other various ginger beers I've had in the UK.

Every time I think about this stuff, I begin to wonder if western Washingtonians and Oregonians actually posses the most reasonable grasp of the English language in the world.

Maybe we're just too laid back to make up crazy shit.

I assume we've all seen this:

You should see how accurate it is. I'm from the Chicago area originally.

I just say Pop. I don't know why, but where I'm from, asking someone for a Soda would sound strange.

Wow.

I was ever rich, I'd have to adorn my mansion with one of the vending machines:

Wow, that map is interesting! I just figured all of Oregon called it 'pop' because that's the only term anyone I knew ever used. But now I happen to live in one of the two counties where it's called soda!

I blame Californian migration.

Coke. It's not just generic for me, though. I'm from Atlanta, and I won't drink Pepsi products.

A cool fact that you could learn from that map if you looked hard enough and counted: Georgia has more counties than any state except Texas.

Fun fact: Absolutely nobody in Australia, anywhere, ever, uses the terms "soda" or "pop".

"Soft drink", "fizzy drink" or "cool drink" is much more likely.

I hear that in the UK, it's a no-no to go bragging to people about the good deal you just got on a fanny pack down at the shops. Something about a slight misinterpretation about which side of the body the fanny resides on. Is this true of Australia as well?

Yes, this is correct. The fanny, in Australia, does not refer to one's bottom, but to something else entirely.

(Hint: It's the vagina.)
