The N64 version looks consistently like shit, while the GC version looks good until you enter an area with pre-rendered stuff in it.

Exactly!

I guess I appreciate consistency.

Yeah, I kind of agree with you. The menus and such look really really terrible in the GC version. I definitely prefer it just because I don't have to use the N64 controller, however.

Euughhh.

Slightly irrelevant and offtopic, but for Nintendo64 games where the whole 'gun' shape of the controller isn't an issue (i.e. NOT Perfect Dark or 007) I've found the Hori Pad Mini to be quite useful. It's designed a bit like the Gamecube pad with regards to the analog stick and general shape, and is much more usable for Zelda and such. It's uncommon, but they pop up on eBay now and then, or you could always have a friend snag one for you on a trip to Japan or something like that.

Yes, pretty much I agree with this.

Elevator Action from which system? And is Sword of Vermillion any good? I've always been kind of interested in it.

Also should we have a thread about this for the PS3 and Xbox as well? Worms is due out Wednesday for the 360 (FUCK YEAH!), and something is due out Thursday for the PS3. I'm hoping for a GDC special release of Calling All Cars.

It is! I bought the collection a while ago but haven't played anything yet other than a little Ecco. I think i'll give Gain Ground a try this week.

Sword of Vermillion is unplayable from a modern perspective in about five different ways. I think the fact that you have to buy quick burn-out candles individually in order to see in dungeons is one of them.

Hey guys yesterday was Sonic Spinball, Tecmo Bowl & Double Dungeons. With Worms coming out and all I kinda forgot about the VC. Since nobody posted this yesterday maybe that means other people are too?

Is Double Dungeons any good? It looks like a Shining in the Darkness/Wizardry clone. Those can be interesting. I might be tempted to pick it up if Wednesday wasn't MOTHERFUCKING NINJA TURTLES THE ARCADE GAME for $5!!! I'm pumped. Who's gonna co-op it with me tomorrow?

Me! Many, many of my quarters were spent on that beautiful machine. And the 1942 next to it.

This will make the second game I've purchased on Live. Contra, you weren't really worth it.

Only the second? Honestly, I think this one might rob me of all of my childhood TMNT:The Arcade Game memories, but for $5 it's still hard to turn down. You should buy Geometry Wars and/or Worms while you're there.

Also, this looks pretty incredible. Kind of odd, since I didn't really like the first one.

Yeah, I have a lot more VC titles. The ability to play demos of Live titles has led to my '90s practice of playing the hell out of a demo until I've had my fill of a title. Since we're generally backed up, it's not too hard to pass over things after I've tried them for a bit.

Splatterhouse! That game always looked so evil in EGM screenshots.

Is it worth playing?

How is Beyond Oasis? I played a lot of the Saturn sequel, Legend of Oasis, which I liked a lot (or at least convinced myself I liked since it was the only Saturn game I owned).

Beyond Oasis is very similar to Legend of Oasis, but I honestly think it's just a little better. It's tighter and has a more focused design and story.

TRIVIA: Beyond Oasis was the first game made by Ancient, a game company run by Yuzo Koshiro - the guy who did the 16-bit era's best music (Streets of Rage, Shinobi, Actraiser, Ys series, etc).

Wow, while Splatterhouse didn't quite age fantastically, it's still pretty awesome in it's own right. It reminded me of what I hoped Friday the 13th would play like on the NES.

probably the most interesting thing about splatterhouse is its approach to bosses, which, with few exceptions (chainsaw maniac), are not single entities. (see: the chapel, the boreworms, the friggin' poultergeist room.)

it also gets points for being a horror game with an interesting premise (the conflict between rick and the mask which gives him his powers).

also the hall of mirrors is some scary shit.

those are actually the two scenes that stick out in my mind when i think of the game. (and the introduction to the first boss, which establishes that rick is as terrible a monster as any that populate the mansion.) i don't know, i feel like the original has more good scenes, and untethered by the more-of-the-sameness that comes with being a sequel (especially a sequel that plays so similiarly to the original).

Luckily we could just import it from the UK.

so i downloaded splatterhouse on my mother's wii. and discovered there were quite a few changes made to the western release of the game!

most notably, rick's mask has been replaced with a bizarre, purple-red mask. the mask in the original is more like a hockey mask - i assume this was changed because of fears of infringing trademarks. (splatterhouse 2 avoids this issue by having the mask look like a skull, which looks a lot better than having purple underwear strapped to rick's face.) the mirror ricks wear bright blue versions of the underwear mask, which look ridiculous.

also, the inverted cross in the chapel is changed to a blue floating head, which is a bit more sensible a change since it is surrounded by similiar floating heads. (it doesn't explain why this particular head is so resiliant when the others explode at a single punch.) the altar and its crucifix (as well as the large crucifix whose shadow is visible behind it) have been removed, but, hillariously, the candles sitting atop the altar have not. so at the end of the stage rick stands before a set of candles floating inexplicably in the air.

all of the gore, however, is apparently intact!

i spent my remaining 600 points on soldier blade.

so i've thus far spent $20 total, on r-type, splatterhouse, and soldier blade. which is about how much i'd have to pay for r-type I and r-type II, plus shipping, at least as much as i'd probably have to pay for the japanese splatterhouse, and a quarter (if even that) of the price i'd have to pay for the soldier blade card.

i think that's pretty good.

I have 800 points left. I wouldn't mind grabbing something on there now (Splatterhouse), but I'm holding out for something that really grabs me (Super Mario Kart). I have Mario Kart 64, Super Mario World, Military Madness, and Zelda: A Link to the Past - all of which are fantastic.

I don't care what you say, thatbox, the virtual console is worth it! Worth it!!

Total Bullshit. Today's game is Romance of the Three Kingdoms IV. Who's gonna be buying this beast? Anyone? Anyone?

Apparently Microsoft's getting Rare's Jetpac on Wednesday for $5. I thought this was Solar Jetman, but I guess this one's a single-screen Solar Jetman that pre-dates the NES classic. I might get it and might skip. Anyone have any experience with Jetpac?

Yup. It's in Donkey Kong 64. It is the best part, by far, of Donkey Kong 64.

Granted, I played them about 8 years ago, and my tastes have changed significantly since then, but I still thought Jetpac was fantastic.

It's also pretty hard.
