I know you said once that you normally don't get a god, or Trog if you do. But have you thought about Okawaru? He takes a lot of piety to get on your side, but he has some excellent advantages for a straight fighter without the hangover of a berzerker.

my love for you is like a truck

I've almost always played a straight fighter and I've gotten to pick a couple religions where I ended up on that floor with all the altars.

okawaru is indeed a decent guy without the drawbacks of trog. trog has a better name, though.

did you know there are orc high priests?

sun demons also suck.

you know what's fun? if you accidentally start a game with the wrong race/class, you can see how many levels down you can get in the dungeon before you get killed - just run without any fighting. my best is 11.

i've been having this same problem. apparently it's designed for the fat libraries, which are somehow exclusive to slot 2 flash devices?

I don't know. I've tried with a friend's supercard micro sd Slot 2 card and it did not even run.

Now i wonder what Slot 2 card i could use to play DSCrawl.
Do you play with a Slot 2 card ? Which one is it ?

PS:
another good RL for the DS or GBA: Powder

The DS version is at early stage :

Nintendo DS Port! Woohoo! Still very rough around the edges - does not take advantage of any DS features. Well, other than the additional RAM and CPU speed. It also can't save games yet. I also have to compile with -O1 rather than -O2 as there appears to be a compiler bug. *sigh*

It works well on my M3 Lite!

It would be nice to see an update to DSCrawl, though. Having played the Stone Soup and tile versions, I kinda miss the interface improvements and extra visual feedback.

so i've been strictly playing chaos knights because they get more neato stuff than straight fighters, and they die a lot easier too.

i don't think i'll ever actually get to hell. clearing out the orc mines is about as good as i get.

i killed that hill giant with my next blow, crept down and slew the troll in two hits, then snuck around and ambushed elrolcha, finishing her in a few turns.

assassins are great.

I've switched over to High Elf Conjurers as all of my fighty characters seemed to have a very limited ceiling of success -- as dhex noted, the orcish mines are pretty much as good as it's going to get.

These guys are a lot more fragile; I think I see the potential though.

(I also think I still prefer Angband. It has nothing to do with the quality of the games and everything to do with the fact that I've been playing Angband since ~1991, so none of the BS bugs me.)

actually i have a save at home that i'm afraid to go to because the dude is fucking shit up from coast to coast - minotaur chaos knight with a 22AC, level 11, 25 strength. xom is like, being mostly nice to me outside of some mutations that made me mildly stupider, the controlled rage amulet lets me fuck over trolls in two hits, etc.

but i'm so afraid to re-start that file, man.

I tried and tried to play an earth elementalist. And while they were fairly awesome to play for those few levels I could make it (these bastards die like flys) I just couldn't seem to do well. I gave up.

I need to play some more crawl.

is there any way to keep the naga guardians from teleporting you away before you can lay the smack, as it were, down?

it takes forever to kill those chumps as a warrior type.

my best run ever, and i get teleported to the fucking abyss by a unique called rupert. this is with xom as a god, mind you. xom was pretty good to me, aside from my body rotting. i had a really nice great mace of protection, too. the snake pit was getting its ass kicked. (poison resistance makes the nagas mostly harmless if you have a good ac and weapon)

Code:

           Mutations & Other Weirdness
Your mind is acute (Int +1).
You are partially covered in supple grey scales (AC + 1).
Armour fits poorly on your badly deformed body.
  Your body is slowly deteriorating.
You are frail (-10 percent hp).
You are partially covered in ridged grey scales (AC + 2, dex - 1).

i don't know what the deterioration thing means.

is dungeon crawl the gift that keeps on giving?

yes.

I remember when I was looking through the code (to do the cockring mod), there's TONS of shit that people haven't even mentioned here in this thread waiting. Oh and there's stuff like this:

I am surprised it worked without having to be recompiled. In your init.txt file, look for the isometric mode option and turn it on.

Yeah, I saw that, and it looks nifty, but most times I can't stand navagating in isometric perspectives. My brain just can't handle it.

Same here. I actually stuck with ascii for the longest time because the isometric was what the page for graphical crawl download displayed. Don't get me wrong. I still love ascii graphics, but for now I'm using the tile version.

the isometric is very strange, indeed.

- xom is such a jerk sometimes. he took me down from 14dex to 6 dex in the course of two floors, with no real explanation. and then i died cause i couldn't hit anything anymore.

have any of you guys tried the castlevania roguelike?

Yeah, and it works ok, but I didn't really understand RLs when I tried it last.

It's kkinda frustrating getting juggled around. Of course I only played an early version of it, but I remember the knockback being a whole new kind of roguelike hell to deal with. Fairly fun though, and the mechanic was true to the ource while not being unroguelike so I'd be willing to give it a shot again.

the castlevania roguelike is actually the most faithful roguelikeification of a commercial game i've played. yes, enemies knock you back, but your whip can hit from several spaces away (the more powered-up it is, the further you can hit). as in castlevania, it's all about keeping enemies at a distance, not getting hit, and moving to the right. and the tile graphics the game currently sports are pretty great.

either i'm getting better or the game is getting easier. fucking hydras suck. so did getting hit with about a billion mutations at once. lost 30 hit points in the course of about 100 turns. then again, xom also gave me nothing but gifts. i think they get pissed when you don't take your gifts.

the vampire axe of hunger was fucking great so long as i had the gourmand amulet on to eat stuff, which i should have swapped off more with the resist mutation amulet.

-

use blunt and piercing weapons to kill hydras. maces, staves, spears. slicing weapons like swords will chop their heads off, causing them to grow new heads.

BLAST FROM THE PAST
i sit on the vault level right before the last. how do i know it's the last? because there are a motherfucking ton of these awful looking things i can only presume are "vault guards" that everyone in rec.games.roguelike.* flip out about.

maybe i should go back and hit the elven halls? i have no poison resistance or magic resistance, and it's a miracle i've lived this long (mountain dwarf fighter, xom, natch) early resist mutation amulet saved my ass a bunch of times i think. having your evasion around 18 is very helpful as well.

i'm at some absurd level. (1Cool i kill ugly things in one hits and hydras die in about 3. it's a nice change from oh no orc sorcerer. the only bad thing about a mountain dwarf is that unlike trolls, you can't eat the really annoying enemies

by the end of the game i was so overpowered that six or seven hydra were regular encounters.

a lot of it is sheer luck. and rule #1 - run away! when in doubt, run away!

i got lucky without poison resistance for a whole lot of run, actually. and some of it is just pecking away at spots, healing up, and pecking some more. having a ridiculous AC is tremendously important, as is resist mutation.

summoners suck, though. the abyss sucks too! i still don't know how i got out of there. pure luck.

eight hours and change. over the course of a week or so. i would stop when i got jittery.

yeah, i'm playing crawl again. it was calling to me!

i think i'm going to attempt to put together a screenshot tutorial. there are a few of those already, BUT: none of them are of the tile version AND none of them really do an adequate job of explaining strategy. it'll probably play as a centaur hunter, since that's pretty much my favored class these days (that and the naga assassin).

I would like to know more of the assassin class. I don't have a firm grasp on how the sneaking and killing really work out. I'm always spotted many yards before I even see them and of course I get KO soon after.

I generally tend to stick to fighters and mage classes. Sometimes minotaur chaos knights and death knights those are always a good time with Xom at my side.

Any character class reccomendations for someone almost completely new to this sort of thing?

(I did try nethack about a year ago, got tired of dying all the time or pointlessly stuck)

An axe wielding Mtn. Dwarf Fighter is a good a place as any to start with. Bash your way to victory, hardy health too.

High Elf is a good race if you want to try a casting class. Getting to Lvl 2 is my immediate goal. Things just get easier to manage once you do.

yeah, start with a fighter (dwarf or minotaur), then try a berserker when you'd like a little more complexity.

so, trapped by manticore with little health, i decided to risk a daring move. i pulled out a sword of distortion i had found earlier - a terrible weapon that distorts space and time - in the hopes that it would send me somewhere else. well, it did:

(note: this is not the screenshot tutorial i previously spoke of.)

mmmm...tasty snacklets!

yeah the abyss is the worst place ever, basically. the one time i got zapped there by a fucking zot trap on this last run i managed to get the hell out only because i was powerful enough to murder the shit out of demons and the like when i got cornered. i was in there a good 10 minutes before randomly finding the exit.

I don't suppose any of you crawlers have much experience with ADOM, do you? That's the only roguelike I've spent significant time with. Getting familiar with that game required a not-insignificant investment of time and energy, and I'm loathe to switch horses now that I'm starting to get ahead. Is Crawl really that much better?
