Or: The Elite Beat Agents Thread is Go!

I have brought the game up on a few other threads, but thought I'd give it some limelight.

There's something wonderfully arbitrary about this game. There is little rhyme or reason to any of its objectives. It knows how preposterous the things it asks you to do are, which is why I love doing them so much.

I am a compulsive steering wheel/desk/leg/air drummer. I love keeping beats to everything, so Elite Beat Agents clicks with me on a really automatic level. I tap my foot while I play it and keep off-beats to keep my timing on.

Getting S-ratings is my new obsession, and the songs all stay in my head for hours after I have been playing the game.

I think about the screen like it has been branded onto my brain just like I used to do with Meteos when I played it all the time.

So, yeah. Elite Beat Agents. Is wonderful.

It's ok. The problem I have is that the animations are far more enjoyable to me than the actual boring, simplistic and arbitrary gameplay, so after playing through normal and hard I've become almost totally bored with it. It strikes an interesting halfway point between games like Parappa and games like Taiko no Tatsujin, though.

I'm stuck at the final boss on two-star. Is there a three-star mode?? One that would require two stylus things?

This game is all I hoped for. I'll pick up the Jaypanese version somewhere down the line.

When you clear the two-star mode you unlock three-star, which has harder patterns. Then when you beat three-star you unlock 4-star, which is like three-star but the circles contract extremely quickly. It's like playing the game with a fast speed mod from another music game or something, except that it's much faster than is comfortable for the player and is uncontrollable. It's... really not much fun!

I just attempted this for the first time a few minutes ago! On my third run-through, I figured out which sounds it wanted me to keep track of at the end, which makes it all click in a really satisfying manner. I didn't get an A on it because my break ended, but I will as soon as I get off work. Jumpin' Jack Flash is the best part of this game.

i rented it, stopped playing, and sent it back. it's hard for me to play any abstract rhythm game after playing rhythm tengoku. i just couldn't find it compelling.

I think people like one or the other. I gave an EBA-liking friend Rhythm Tengoku and he became upset at the game during the kung fu stage. Really mad, as in "WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS? THIS IS FUCKED UP"

another strike against eba/ouendan is that it doesn't have a cat soundbox

That's the Namco drum game? With the two large drums, right? It's fun, I had no idea what to do with the blue faces, only the red. Of course, I was drunk at the time

On the blue drums you hit the side of the drum or the edge.

I like Taiko no Tatsujin more on the PSP surprisingly enough even though I'm not holding fake plastic taiko sticks.

"September" is a whole lot of fun on the hard mode. I like trying to alternate thinking about the horns and the lyrics. I think I just like horns, actually. Hey, somebody tell me to import rhythm tengoku so that I can really enjoy it just to prove that guy wrong.

Yeah, I do too. Probably because the drum that comes with the ps2 version is fucking horrible. Saying that I like the game more on the PSP still isn't a recommendation, though. I am pretty jaded when it comes to stupid music games!

Also: Rhythm Tengoku is wonderful and if you don't like it I'm pretty sure you have brain damage.

I give lots of bonus points to games with songs I already know, which is why I like Ouendan and Taiko no Tatsujin Portable so much. And the new version for PSP has フレンジャー by Otsuka Ai and they have copies at the local Fry's so I will probably end up getting that as well.

I agree about Rhythm Tengoku but I'd say wait for the translated and probably cheaper domestic release.

edit: I thought this was announced for a us release, although I can't find evidence of that anywhere now.

Yes. But not because you love Rhythm Tengoku, unless you want to help me challenge that guy and love them both.

I have about 10 medals left in Tengoku. That damn game show...

But, really, the way the game visualizes rhythm is brilliant. It's the only one of the bemani spawn that actually makes you want to make music.

It has really awesome drum lessons, too! I transferred the skills to real drums

Also, helicopterp, I'm going to be sticking around even after IC and SB go up so you can call me by my handle rather than 'that guy' =P

pro-tip: the embellishment is always either zero, one or two notes long. if you can recognize when the initial pattern ends, and know how many notes are in it, you can easily add the notes from the embellishment.

remember, all that you need to match in the game is the number.

I'm on top of it, Dongle.

So yeah, I tried to read some Chaucer today. It got really hard because diminishing circles kept appearing over all the words.

And I was doing great in Hard mode until I hit "Canned Heat"--that Jamiroquai is one crafty bastard.

it's the first genuinely hard stage in the game.

It's an inspired choice for the game, even with the napoleon dynamite tie-in, but then I might say that about most Jamiroquai songs.

I just unlocked "Survivor" by Destiny's Child this morning. I only got to try it once before I had to go to class and work, but I love it! The scenario involves a peanut delivery man and either zombies or aliens. At one point he shoots the zombie/aliens with a peanut gun and they become normal people again. More as the events unfold...

Mr. Toups--This thread title is now slightly misleading, because I was whistling Jackson 5 tunes in class even before "ABC" in this game. I recall taking my shirt off and dancing on a table in a bar last time I heard "I Want You Back" in public.

Update: I still love this game and play it more than anything else right now.

I have decided that all of the songs are wonderful by the time you get to the hard mode except for 'rock this town,' which has sucked balls since the moment I heard it.

Also, the extra hard mode features divas instead of agents dancing. They are hilarious.

Dongle, consider yourself wrong. Rhythm Tengoku came in the mail for me this weekend, and I love it. I don't know that I can say anything about this game that hasn't already been said, but I have medaled each of the first twelve stages (I haven't gone on to the next round yet).

I don't know that it grabs me quite as much as Elite Beat Agents does--I'm still playing that one, too--but it's a more thoughtful, smarter game, sophisticated in the way that WarioWare Twisted! is.

The Japanese is a bit of a barrier for me, though, in that I am not quite sure why some games keep getting little funny white boxes around them after I finish them, as if inviting me to play them again. Also, there seem to be five play modes from the title screen, but all I have tried is the first one because I don't know what the other four are supposed to be. Help?

I accept defeat, but being wrong is a price I am willing to pay to move another copy of Rhythm Tengoku Razz At least we agree that it's an intelligent game.

When you get that funny white box, you have three chances to replay the stage and get a perfect to earn a bonus.

One of the other modes is drum lessons. It's pretty f'ing awesome.

Does it count chances against you if you don't go and try it immediately? Because I've been ignoring them so far. And is perfect the same rating as getting a medal, or is there something better to shoot for?

Also, I've medaled each of the first 36 stages. Does the game get hard?

perfect is perfect, as in not missing a single beat. playing perfect will get you a medal, but to get perfect you have to not miss anything.

don't worry about ignoring a chance at perfect when it appears. it'll keep coming back until you do it.

i still have something like fourteen perfects left to get after all these months, so it's not easy.
