I mean, maybe the next big poll will have a more resounding winner, but so far it looks as though a lot of people like some names and a lot of people like others.

If it's set up so that appreciated contributors are allowed to link their URL and upload their banner into the rotation, it would further cement the "a community owned by the community" vibe.

I really genuinely like HSB's idea. Which may in fact be a sign of how deranged it really is!

I know what you mean! I think it is right on that border of pure genius and insanity that I almost want to see it implimented somewhere... but not somewhere I actually care about! Still, it is kind of a graceful way of dealing with the 8-million-inside-joke-domain-names-and-a-few-actually-good-ones problem... but the logistics of actually explaining this to people and how to reference the site are just mind-bending!

to be clear, the reason you're saying "almost" is technical feasibility, right?

Multiple URLs that all connect to one main forum ? Hence multiples "names" or "domains". That would amazing...

Oh god people, no. It is a horrible idea of insanity.

Oh, anyways...

Domain names are just indirection for IP addresses, you see. So you can have as many domain names you want point to a single IP address. You just have to make sure the webserver will accept those domain names, so someone would need to keep them in a text file. Then, you just have a little php script that randomly picks one and the associated banner and makes it a link. Then, just make sure you always use relative paths when setting up your site...

Let me put it this way: I want to say fuck you because I totally intend to not get into this ic revival thing and your crazy idea is making me doubt my own decision.

I don't want to be in the top 5 posters again! I don't want my fingers to habitually hit the three keystrokes that take me to the forum!

Curse your idea!

check it out: this shit is genius. When all the haters try to get on us, they won't even know what the fuck to say. It'll be great. Anyone that would be interested in a site with six hundred domain names and a million banners is probably someone we would want posting.

I'm not saying that we need to go out and register all these things at ten bucks per year a pop (after the first year discounts and so forth). Just that anybody who's part of the community and has a domain that they want to be part of the Fight Club can get that done.

Freeman, for example, could call it newgamesjournalism.com and ajutla could register tetulisu.co.jp and both of them could make banners and so forth. But they'd have to actively want to do this! It has to have a personal investment, more than just "oh shit, now we have to buy all these domains."

I can see it now! At some point the whole internet will link to the same forum! The perfect webbertron. The internet finally unified!

Also imagine the good spirited cussing and fighting in the forums about whos url is the real one.

Honestly that's some crazy shit. Exactly how I like it.

You can't actually have that many domains without paying to register them. It'd have to be more of a hobbyist frontend thing.

Well, if people really wanted a "sane" way to do this you could have it popup a random banner underneath "the real" banner or something... or require the "real" name to be included in the banner somehow... or I don't know! And then instead of having the site actually reside with those domains, you could just have the site do a 301 Redirect of those names to the actual site.

Like you could imagine a big banner with 2ps in his Halloween costume and the text "TOUPSE.CZ", and then the real website address in the lower right hand corner...

So if someone went to:

forums.toupse.cz/viewtopic.php?t=9378

It would just redirect them to:

forums.therealname.com/viewtopic.php?t=9378

That way people will still browse the site at the real name, and the real name would always be there, but everyone could still have hi-larious inside-jokey domain names with banners and links that actually work.

So... you know... uuh... that's actually something that might be kind of cool (WITHOUT EXPLODING THE INTERNET) to discuss once the site is up!

Yeah, I think it's really important that, regardless of what we do, there be a clear Real Name. Mostly for reasons of focus and identity. Keeps things from being murky from the start.

heylisten (no one gave this one any attention, but it's really clever)

insertcartridge and saveandcontinue are two good donations from the TGQ end.

I propose that the one true and real name be a name that nobody registers a domain for. It can be called something, like "postmodern" or whatever, but all referring domains and rotating banners will be other names.

Also, I think if there were multiple domain names, no matter what you entered, it should automatically force you to a random alternate domain for the site. So when you go to newgamesjournalism.com, you end up at toups.cx, but your'e still at the forums all the same.

It's such a stupid idea that it's perfect for a bunch of people just trying to make some new forums to hang out at.

actually no I like that idea

I think initially I envisioned it where each domain would present the site with a completely different layout and various forum people could build and swap them and we'd have topics and it'd be like playing house but with bold industrial design

I proposed something like that initially, but figured that it was too bitchy to implement. HSB's idea of randomness leading to a single thing is nice. If people want alternate color schemes, they can configure something in their profile.

What about something onomatopoeic, like pewpewpew.com, or some such?

I also like heylisten.com quite a lot.
