Finally read the whole thread, so.... a few additional thoughts/questions:

- I had totally forgotten what a prick Icy was. As much as I, again, found the idea of making him a mod totally intriguing, the stuff quoted really made me disgusted.

- And I didn't think my opinion of Tim could go any lower before all this. At a certain point recently, even knowing that the guy kinda dislikes (maybe hates?) me, I figured that when I go to Japan next year, I would drop him a line. You know, I hate on a bunch of people online, but in real life I'm far more agreeable, and even pretty forgiving. But now... whatever.

- As for Brandon, in the end, Insert Credit is his thing and he can do whatever he pleases, regardless of what we all think.... But, I think it was a bit foolish for him to nuke the forums in hopes of it re-shaping it in his vision simply because: A) its plain dumb to think that he, or anyone else, can try control the talk that happens on a message board, without some sort of consistent, iron fisted rule, but also B) having front page specific talk would be far more likely to happen if, you know, the front page was updated with far more frequency and consistency. I think I speak for others that I pretty much forgot the front page existed due to regular updates, and I was one person that posted news up front! This isn't meant to be a direct dig on Brandon, but you know, since I know he's a very busy person, but... you know.... when the cat is gone, yada, yada.

- As for staring my own version of the Axe, Toups does have a point by stating that having one by itself wouldn't be the same and would be just a Hell wannabe. And especially given that there seems to be others competing to fill the void, I just don't want to go through the trouble of setting something up and having just three memebers, cuz that would be kinda lame.

... though I'm convinced his advice for me to not go ahead is because he wants to fill the void himself, the f'n egotist.

But seriously, I've sorta been entertaining the idea of starting forums on my site for my own reasons, so this might be a good start, and if a few folks from around here would like to join, that would be awesome. I guess I need to talk more with my webmaster about it, and dmauro, who has offered to help.

- Though I also agree with Toups' wait and see attitude. Though when IC 2.0 opens, it will be different, and I'm not sure if I would be joining in the end. Ultimately, as a few others have stated, its perhaps best to let IC forums rest in peace.

I personally would not like to see this place become the new IC forums since... its not. It would be unfair, even rude, to the denizens who are already here. Though I did say to dhex that I will try and post more often. Up till this point, I was afraid to since I often ruffle people feathers (and its usually unintentional... I swear to God!) and the last thing I want to do is ride on someone's opinion too hard, even if there's no malice behind it, and then be deemed a trouble maker in someone else's backyard. I felt a certain sense of freedom at the IC, which I don't have here, and I know and respect this fact.

- In the end, which poster will I miss the most? The one guy who like posted once the last time things got rebooted: cocaine specialist. Maybe he'll find his way here.

Also Scarface123. I'm gonna miss that guy.

- My only question, is a burning one; someone sent me a PM, and I got the notification via email, but I never logged in to check, since I was so busy this weekend. I wonder what it was about...

- Lastly, dhex and I are also going to write a book about all of this.

What pissed me off firstly was that Captain EO was banned on what seems to amount to Eric-Jon Waugh's whim

Yeah. I didn't agree with that, either. The guy popped into a thread and said he didn't like the LoTR movies, or LoTR in general, so he didn't care if Peter Jackson wasn't directing the Hobbit. For one thing, it was kind of useless for him to point that out. However, it was also useless to ban him for that.

JamesE wrote:
Now, icyclam. The gossip is that Tim and Aderack leaned on Brandon to have him installed for the sake of their own egos, and it certainly seems plausable given the attitudes they expressed.

No. No. The truth is that Brandon approached the mods in the mod forum saying he was planning to de-mod everyone, and make it so there were "No mods". The idea would be to make there be no mods, so that no one could hate on the mods for being mods. The idea was to remove as much resentment as possible, and see if people became "civilized."

To this, Psiga and DeusJester and Aderack and Toups alike all agreed. They said, "Sure. Go for it." And that was it. I decided to agree as well.

Let it be said that the mod forum had previously been constantly full of bickering threads about banning you -- James -- and the vinculum gate. I had not been allowed access to those mod forums until just two months ago, because I believe I said at the creation of the forums, years ago, that I didn't want to be a moderator. I guess it was when DeusJester became the admin that I kind of got curious.

Some of those multi-page threads in there were terrifying on many, many levels. I won't get into it. It put me into a really bad mood in my office for a couple of minutes.

Anyway. Brandon didn't like the forums. He didn't like the attitudes. He didn't like the in-jokes. He basically wanted the forums to serve the website. And the website was, let's face it, doing nothing. He's been planning to let the website actually do something from now on, and the way things stand, when someone says "insertcredit", people think "insertcredit forums" (or they think "tim rogers" and shake their fists). I guess Brandon wanted balance?

He was never too clear to me about what he wanted. One day about a month ago, he emailed me and said that he really liked icyclam's website. He remembered icyclam's warnings on the forums, about how we could have been making money with insertcredit.com, seeing as blogs like kotaku and joystiq make money. I remember chatting with Brandon the day icyclam was saying that. Brandon's attitude was, "Man, you know, he's kind of right."

At Tokyo Game Show time, me and Brandon discussed the idea of getting rid of the forums completely, after giving all users warning far in advance. We would then auction off the forum archive to a poster who, I don't know, won a contest or something, and send him all the files so he could relocate it to a dedicated server, with a new name. insertcredit.com would then take on a blog-based format, wherein readers would post comments on news stories, and we would simply delete, with extreme prejudice, any comments that approached the lowest of kotaku's standards (the "LOL" comments) or, god forbid, a 1up.com user review. The usual "insertcredit-style" long posts and thoughtful arguments would be welcome and encouraged. It would be grand.

However, just last month, Brandon emailed me saying that he'd been talking to icyclam recently, and had the idea to install him as the sole admin. He said he believed icyclam could make the forums "better". My imagination lit up at this -- I've no personal beefs with icyclam (mainly because I'm a vegetarian), and I found the previous "drama" surrounding his being kicked off the forums to be quite ridiculous. icyclam had arrived at the forums as a curious man, eager to participate, asking questions about videogames, and he was shot down and berated by furious and jaded assholes.

Remember a month ago when some kid came in and said "I'm stuck at this part in Landstalker, and I was wondering--" and Rudie replied about three seconds later with a link to GameFAQs saying "THIS LINK MIGHT BE USEFUL TO YOU" and then locked the thread, and then threw it into Thread Fighter Zero, the archive where we put all the coolest and most interesting and/or most thought-provoking threads? Basically, that was the kind of behavior the forum had bred into people.

A kid came to our community bearing no ill will, obviously dead fascinated with Landstalker, a fucking great videogame, a game that, should a kid choose to play it over, I dunno, Kingdom Hearts, would just about qualify him for the status of "hopeful young mind" -- and one of our community quickly and sharply and cruelly casted him away like he had cooties. Someone could have said "You could check GameFAQs". You could have even taken pity on the kid and actually linked him to GameFAQs. You could have even linked him to the specific Landstalker page, or even gone in there and read it for him, and come back and said, "You should do this . . ." and then said, you know, there's this site called GameFAQs where you can find tips on games like this. That the possibility existed that the kid didn't know what GameFAQs was should have been viewed as a blessing.

The kid came back and posted the same thread again, wondering why he was shamed so in his previous attempt. He was then slightly berated until he gave up.

See, icyclam didn't give up. The idea of being flamed by people he'd approached with good intentions fascinated the living fuck out of him. He chose to sit around and study it. I was cheering him on for a while. Then things started getting petty, and he did one thing I thought was kind of petty, and I was disappointed, and I sent him a heartfelt email in which I said a few things I didn't mean. Up until then, he'd been my internet hero. He'd been like the nameless protagonist of a Dragon Quest game. I got a good email from him, had lunch with him a couple of times, and then kind of lost contact with him.

Brandon apparently picked up where I left off. When he approached me and said icyclam had a solution for making the forums "better", I thought for a second. I really liked the insertcredit.com forums. I really liked the vibe. I have a lot of other things going on in my life aside from the internet; I have a nice job (freelance translating) that I can do at home and live comfortably (with my nice huge TV) and play guitar and take warm baths and go on train rides reading paperback novels and hang out in cafes and bars with artists and feel special. The insertcredit.com forum was a more-than-fun place to spend the downtime. It was a more-than-good place to waste the time I had to waste. I was always aware that it might be gone at any given snap of some fingers.

And then Brandon said icyclam would make it "better." When it comes to music, movies, books, and videogames, Brandon's and my definitions of "better" have always disagreed by the most morbidly subtle margins. Still, I figured, I owed my opportunity to post at insertcredit.com to Brandon. If he didn't like the forums, then he didn't like them. If he thought MMCafe was "better" than F.IC, then so be it.

The better solution, I believe, would have been to announce the forums were getting a new moderator, and then pass the archive to one lucky (?) user, and then start the old forums anew. Basically, a change in direction for the zeitgeist.

Still, when the idea was presented to me, I told Brandon "Go for it." I told him this because it was his site, and his decision. Who was I to say that icyclam's proposition for making the forum "better" wouldn't have been to just show up, freak out the people who were disgusted by his name, be upright and civil, allow the forums to continue as they were, and prove that the people who had left were prejudiced jerks to begin with? That's what I was hoping, deep down, was going to happen. At least, I imagined, I could expect nothing like the hazing of the Landstalker kid to happen under icyclam's reign.

Well, what happened was a little different. You'll have to forgive me for finding it all a bit hilarious. Because it kind of is.

In the end, I trusted Brandon and icyclam because I had chosen, long ago, to trust them. I can not say that I don't trust them anymore. They got what they wanted.

A few months ago, to provide another example, my girlfriend came across an old acquaintance of hers in the street. It was a guy. He had his girlfriend with him. My girlfriend had previously, one year ago, tried to set this guy up with a friend of hers, a girl she thought was extremely gorgeous. The guy met the girl once at a party, got her number, and then never called her. It was rumored, later, that he fell in love with a girl he met at Starbucks. The girl had been working there, it seemed. When my girlfriend ran into the guy, he was with a girl. "Is this the Starbucks girl?" she asked. "Yes," he said. She laughed at him. She then came home and told me how she'd laughed at him. I told her it was a pretty horrible thing to laugh at the guy. She said, she wouldn't have done it if her friend hadn't been so broken up about the guy snubbing her. I told her, well, it was his choice to snub her. It was her choice to listen to you and give her phone number to him. Would the politer thing to do have been to reject the number?

Likewise, once I broke up with a wonderful girl, instead choosing to go out with a girl I'd been friends with for many years. While, today, I can call that the worst decision of my life, back then, it seemed like love. Love had been the very action of choosing. It hurt someone else. Et cetera. The wonderful girl was very mad. She cursed me. She said that she was prettier than the other girl, and that she loved me more than the other girl possibly could. She said I wasn't being fair. Yet I hadn't cheated on her. I'd announced that my mind had changed, and I was going to try something else. I apologized to her. Had I truly been polite? Maybe, maybe not. I felt like a jerk. I felt absolutely terrible. I could sense that her attachment to me had been greater than my attachment to her. It lent a morbid air to the whole situation. That air would never go away.

Human relationships are tricky. Like many things, they can never be perfectly explained by math.

The insertcredit.com forums, to hear Brandon say it, had grown independent of the website. To hear Brandon describe it, that's almost a compliment. Telling them to go start their own forum somewhere else, then, must have also seemed like a compliment. It's like telling a girl, "In the four years we've lived together, I've come to recognize you as a beautiful and wonderful person that just isn't right for me -- you'd be right for so, so many other people, though!" Does the girl have a right to be pissed at this "compliment"? Of course. I can only stand there in the background and bear witness to the "compliment", and wince.

People of insertcredit.com, I enjoyed the cookies you baked whenever I went over to Brandon's house. I enjoyed your vegetarian barbecues on weekday afternoons. I can't console you and offer to take you out to dinner, get you drunk, and then try and get you in my apartment, because I owe a duty of respect to brandon. However, I would gladly go over to your house, if you'd bake those cookies again, and not mind me eating a few of them.

Please don't villify me or say that I "planned" to "destroy" the forums. I had threatened to nuke the forum many times, yes. I had said "I have access to the ftp and I'll delete the /forums directory if you fuckers don't shape up" many times. That was mostly my sense of humor. (It feels kind of creepy to type such a sentence.)

Hahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh (<-- that's supposed to be the sound of a sigh)

SO THAT'S THE WHOLE SITUATION. No need to "gossip" about it any further.

At any rate. THE FORUMS ARE NOT "NUKED". They still exist. They were just removed from public eye because of the child pornography.

In the end, it was an ugly weekend. I've been in a contemplative mood about a lot of things lately, the least of which is the insertcredit.com forum. All the same, it's a bit of something to think about.

Tough times happen.

Everyone will be okay soon.

Yeah, this is the gist of what I got from Brandon as well. To be honest I think his real problem is that the forums have gotten too large. That's reading between the lines a bit, but yeah.

As for that movie... I don't know if its safe for public consumption, at least in these parts.

I usually shower in the morning, right after I wake up, before going to school. Unless I sleep in and don't have the time, then I just go a day without showering. Sometimes if this happens on a Friday I'll go until Sunday without bathing and my hair gets really gross and oily.

Wilkes, I did not bring her because I wanted to make love with her, okay? However, we did dance crazy that night. I brought her because she was a friend -- well more like an acquaintance. If I was just bringing a regular friend then why not bring a dudefriend? Because boys are gross!

That trailing ellipses, I do not know how to interpret it!

Wilkes, I think your 1000th post is dedicated to Jeff.

Also, the fast rising of my hearts-level in the beginning got me addicted, and now it is slowing down, but to keep it rising, I'm willing to do more and more tedium!

Damn you videogames!!
