So, I picked up a really nice flat-crt trinitron off the street today and I want to use it in TATE mode for MAME. Except.. it's VGA and my laptop's video out is DVI?
How do I do this?

A big electronics store may have a hardware converter that you could use. It's an iffy proposition though.
Where did you find this CRT? I'd love to know, as I'm in the market for a free CRT myself.
Does it turn on? |

A DVI-to-VGA adapter!
My videocard came with a couple of these, one of which I am using until I get a DVI monitor. They woirk pretty flawlessly.

my first google search had a $300 signal converted at the top of the page and I freaked out a little

It turns on fine! And the "no signal" message looks pretty clean so hey. I got it on a "free computer parts" table in the town library. If you want a free monitor, just snoop around some college dorm dumpsters whenever a semester is ending. You'd be stunned what people just don't want to bother packing in.
Also craigslist.

Yessir! Those DVI -> VGA adaptors are cheap and plentiful and couldn't work any better!

the monitor on my family's imac is dying somehow. it's like the brighter a pixel is takes away from the rest of the row, resulting in annoying dark-red-tinted-lines all over the monitor (especially noticeable with open windows against a dark background)

Contra arcade is Tate. I've already gone over my preference for that version in another thread. Apart from the usual mess of shooters, there's really not much else besides Breakout clones and most of the early Namco titles such as Dig Dug (hells yeah) and Rally-X.
You should check out Block Carnival by Visco (I think). It's interesting. |
