I can't really believe I got banned for asking about icyclam's stance of freedom. Still. I'm confident I will enjoy Gamer's Quarter.

Yeah. Whoever invited all those 4Chan people? Sorry, but you're less cool than icyclam. Man. I only looked at the "Wii is Overrated" thread and the "dead body" picture and that was more than enough.

oh, sorry mate!

yeah i was pretty pissed to see the axe gone. it was perhaps the best e/n forum on the net in terms of being full of vents and rants and irrelevancy without devolving into "hey guys look i'm the most hardcore and insensitive of all of you"

plus, you know, it's therapeutic to have a place where you can post things that you only half mean and know are half wrong.

i think structurally IC was ok, but i definitely agree that it went downhill recently as it became more about in-jokes and infighting than discussion. that said, i thought that having /some/ in-jokes and infighting amid the discussion was great.

perhaps the new forums needed a stated vision of sorts? the new IC was all iron fist blah blah (whether that was intended, that's how it came across to a lot of people), and the old IC was very nebulous and almost proud of its elitism and irreverence.

I like TGQ and I'll definitely be spending more time here, but I enjoyed the old middle-finger hi tim etc personality of IC because I didn't take that part of it seriously at all.

I don't even know where to begin saying something after that.

I think that I lost sight recently as to how important insert credit has been to me. The exchange of ideas and media, to say nothing of friendship, has been a key aspect of my development over the past couple of years. I always meant to become more involved with so many people on the board, and there are projects and promises left to fulfill. There was a time when I wanted everyone to unite and work towards something as a natural result from the incredible discussions our community fostered, and I still feel that the forums' potential was never met. But I don't want to look at it as something that has died. We need to take advantage of the fact that so many of us are still together in this place now and rebuild.

Let's say our prayers, and then let's move on in the best way that we can.

Okay look, blaming this on Brandon is bullshit. Yes making icyclam a mod was a really bad decision but in no way does it justify (nor could he or any other person anticipate) what happened. the real person at fault is whoever started that tread at 4chan. I'm already feeling pretty heartbroken about this happening. I'd rather not hear people try and play the blame game now.

You are more than welcome to a copy of it if you want. I think it is buried somewhere on this computer. Though my random crap about Killer8 died with that part of the Axe.

Thinking about writing that now, it really kind of embodied part of what IC meant for me. I wrote that on a lark for that random top 100 games post that was in the Axe while I was sitting in my beat-to-shit chair at my desk at my 20 hours a week grad assistantship job which only really had about 8 hours a week of work to do. Writing it made me realize that I actually had a piece of my life tied into some tiny characters invented and invested with life by a bunch of Japanese guys who never even could possibly know who I was. And that was fine.

IC meant also thinking about not just some sense of nostalgia but why it all worked that way. Tearing it apart into pieces and fucking around with those pieces. Whether it was thread in which one little mechanic was disected, or if a whole game was argued over to death repeatedly ('sup Killer7), IC just meant to me thinking about games not as a number out of 10, but as a whole. Style issuses like NGJ or overly complex analysis or whatever...IC was the first place to get me thinking about why I liked the games I liked, and not just telling other people I liked them.

I don't think anyone entirely knows, but it seems that IC imploded over something not worth imploding over.

IC got a new mod, some members baited him and spammed the forums, a banned member got the 4/7chan strike teams to invade, child porn was involved, IC is down.

I refreshed the forums all damn day and I think I got a decent portion of the facts but a lot of actions still don't make sense to me.

I didn't go to IC long; it's kind of sad that this happened. This is basically what happens when people don't relax Sad If someone hadn't baited icyclam and gotten the people from 4chan involved, it wouldn't be so bad.
I was really looking forward to FKW '07. I couldn't even manage to be registered a year at the IC forums Sad
Also I don't want to lose track of people from IRC and the forums. Hopefully they all find there way here.

Christ, that's not even real beer. I'm amazed at how the IC fallout generated dozens of pages of posts over there in short time, leading to to the forum's apparent implosion, and a host of fellows on driftwood floating over here.

I tried to explain the situation to my wife as a group of people who most certainly wouldn't agree with absolute rule being told what to do. Then it was Rage Against the Machine time, and yeah. Here we are.

Stay a while! Make sure to check out Persona's thread for Boob-Off artwork!

Well, when something is called Final Forums Solution, I feel it's probably going to affect me. And hey it did.

And once again hey, Brandon said in the READ.ME thread "The forums fucking suck." So yeah I guess I shouldn't think that Brandon has problem with the forums.

It's not a self esteem problem. It's an unwillingness to talk face to face. I've gone over this numerous times already. But if something is going to effect someone, and it is planned and it is said to be non-malicious action, the person in question should be told in advance. It should have been brought before the forum before it happened.

Hot Stott Bot, you were always funny and charming. You obviously had a good idea about what life was about, and how to live it best. I think your wife is going to be a very lucky woman, and that you're going to become a great father. I think daughters would suit you best, but you'd do equally well with sons. It's a bit surreal to see someone like you so obviously distraught and upset, but I suppose that's just the way it is. I'd say that I hoped you'd live a happy life after this, but really too much of a foregone conclusion for me to bother with such as uncertain a word as hope. Lead the life you're obviously destined for man, you deserve it.

:group hug:

Oh stotelheim! I'll calm down eventually and go back to my usual shtick somewhere or another. Hopefully, on the insert credit forums, since I think it will still be possible to make a decent recovery from this if handled right.

If not though, then hopefully you will buy a videogame I worked on sometime and find something I've contributed to it funny and/or charming as well!

Anyways, I'm almost settled down... it... takes a lot to get me riled up, and even more for me to settle down in the (very rare) times that it happens.

yes, but if this were the french revolution, who is robespierre?

it struck me this morning as i was checking to make sure the tgq forums hadn't been invaded in a bad way (refugees are ok; kiddie porn is not, etc) that insert credit was killed by the human manifestation of anime=soul cancer.

i'm fairly sure that makes me a prophet of some kind.

I think what happened was long over due. Not the raid part, but the airing of grievances part. The raid part was because the moderator was totally inept at population control. When people start in like that, you sit out for a while and let them finish blowing off steam. Banning them only gets them more rilled up.

Here's my take on the night.

1) The axe was missing, weird.
2) Oh, people are venting in a "I'm leaving" thread.
3) Hey, README, new mod, swell.
4) It's be funny to defy the 80x80 avatar rule with a joke avatar.
5) Hold on a second, people are really getting pissed about this new mod.
6) #insertcredit wants to rebel, let me convince them to be non-violent about it.
7) MagnetMom thread, I want to see if it'd get locked because they don't like the game.
Cool Joke threads everywhere, wow, this is funny but wrong.
9) Widespread chaos and bannings.
10) 4chan invasion.
11) Megas and Beige argue in #icyclam over ytmnd.

oh come on. it was the concept of the thread that he took affront to. the content was light-hearted and had no aim of being insulting. to say it was insulting is some grave oversensitivity.

people on the discussion forum were used to discussing things in the discussion forum. telling me that I am not allowed to discuss the topic of disallowed discussion within a discussion forum burned a little.

unless you are talking about the second license plate thread. I had nothing to do with that.

I am talking about the second license plate thread, but I think the first one wasn't a great idea either. Like you said there wasn't anything wrong with the content but the concept of it (which was less "let's have a thread in which we post like the axe" and more "hey let's see how far we can push icy before he snaps") was bad. It only made the immediate problem worse.

well, yeah.

you can't rely on people for that. you can count on people to lose their cool, however. lamenting their losing it makes the whole situation come off as a result of limited foresight, which is ashamedly why Brandon is getting so much guff.

guff I don't think he deserves.

that's a good point, though I don't think it was an unfair reaction.

Brandon didn't even bother to talk to anyone who actually frequented the forums about his concerns before he pulled his big switcheroo. I'm sorry, but if you really give a shit about the forums you own, you should try talking to the residents before you install a new regime that will immediately clash with the residents in a bad, bad way.

Yeah, this was the problem. Lack of communication. But I see this less as Brandon being callous and more as being desperation on his part, for lack of any seemingly better options.

Please stop trying to shift blame to others. Brandon made a very bad mistake and did so in an ill-informed manner but at the same time we were all part of the problem which caused him to do that to began with. And yeah, he DOES deserve the benefit of the doubt because they were HIS forums, and if he has a problem with how things have become we owe it to him to default to that.

Also yeah, see what wilkes says. It's well within brandon's right to have done this. And it was up to us to respond in a reasonable manner. Instead we took the "mob rule" route.

Mister Toups, please, you do yourself no favors by misrepresenting the events of last night as "mob rule." If anything, the vast, vast majority of the posters were on our best behavior that night. We protested the sheer stupidity of icyclam's reign in a quite rational manner. icyclam made very bad decisions from the outset of his reign. Some posters chose to bring a bit of the Axe to general, yes, but they were few and they did it in the spirit of light-hearted resistance, not mob violence. Brandon might own the forums, but I think we're right to express our outrage at how the man who is supposed to be in charge of them made such a thoughtless gesture to change the "problems" he saw with the forums without even thinking of discussing it with the people it would effect.

Do you really, truly believe that a week of simmering anger and resentment would have resulted in a better end for all of this? If so, you should start talking to icyclam about that. It is his actions that caused the outpouring of resistance.

I'm pretty ashamed to say that I wasn't really on my best behavior, and I'm not trying to make excuses for myself, but hell, I was really angry. I grew up with Insert Credit, literally, and to see it like that just really made me angry.
