Pardon me while I wipe the dust off this ol' thing, here. I'm not quite ready to play the refugee part in full -- figure I'm gonna update my profile, and then wander homeless for a month or two.
I'll miss the black, and won't miss walking around wearing a green target.
Edit: Oh sure, wink. Post before me. Your amazing Chinaman speed has bested me yet again. |

Yeah, I'm guessing someone probably hit it with a DoS attack, since it looks like the whole site, and not just the forum. The question is if someone from 4chan did it, or if icyclam flipped out and did it himself...

I was wondering myself if icy was the one who called in the "airstrike", but that's just conspiratorial rumblings that have no basis in fact... yet. |

Hi. Um, long time reader, first time poster.Sorry I'm part of the flood, but I'll respect the atmosphere here (I was one of the 'serious' posters on IC anyhow).
EDIT: oh hey I see some people who left IC because the S/N was low, not due to the regime change.

I have this beautiful image of a bunch of refugees walking through the rain, bleeding, all torn up from an epic struggle on the streets of a huge metropolis going sour, that suddenly ended with a third world country taking the opportunity to launch a massive bombing campaign, and now they're arriving at a nice warm camp in Canada, being greeted with lots of hard liquor and beer!

I really wasn't done watching the train wreck though.
About the /b/ thing, I had heard about such attacks occurring, but looking at that thread is a very very bizarre thing to me. It's so organized, everyone's so eager, and they barely needed a reason. It's actually very frightening.
Also, I am wondering how exactly it works that a php database is overloaded by such a mass spamming. |

I've never really known Brandon, but I had plenty of assumptions about him being, you know, normal, level-headed, capable in various regular sorts of ways. Today's events completely devastated that view. I have never been so shocked and disappointed by someone's immediately apparant failings in social intuition (to put it mildly), short-sightedness, ignorance of DEATHLY IRONY, poor judge of character, and lack of respect for human life.
Really. Wow. |

Hmm... so I guess icyclam is still admin, and probably locked all the forums as soon as he was able, or amid the 4chan bombing, or somesuch...
Well then...
I can at least see what I missed in the last few minutes!
I'm pretty sure Brandon went to bed a while ago, so I'm wondering what's going to happen when he wakes up.
If someone wants to crawl a few of the "epic posts" and make sure to save them to their hard drive for Brandon, in case something happens and no one is able to express the sheer insanity of the evening, that would probably be very smart of you.

I think icyclam deleted the silly poll I posted asking whether or not people thought he was trying to silence me.
Which is doubly hilarious because didn't he say somewhere that he WOULDN'T DELETE THREADS, he would JUST LOCK THEM so the IDIOCY OF THE THREAD CREATOR would SHINE FORTH in a display of SOMETHING? _________________

honestly, i liked IC a lot, but the hostilities that existed (even though i had nothing to do with any of it) really brought things down at times. and most of it usually seemed pretty pointless.
i mean, that's not really a suggestion; more of an observation. |

I was thinking more concrete things. Also, we could build a community free of such hostilities by remembering the past and being more conscious about how we speak to one another. |

Don't Press Start? Like the Faxe with more pomp and circumstance.
It's impressive that IC went into total thermonuclear 4chan 7chan kiddie pr0n and dead bodies D.O.S. meltdown in half a day. From "here's your new manager" to "call the Feds!" in about twelve hours. A couple hours more and the whole thing was unplugged from life support, eh?
Who knows where it'll go from here, but as of this moment it seems like a fitting way to self-destruct the ol' club house. Equal parts wild-eyed and pompous, wretchedly crass and slyly classy, stupid and yet thoroughly effective. People whose opinions were often deeply opposed were finally agreeing -- agreeing that this was the worst idea in insert credit history.
And now I laugh at myself for thinking that only a few people would leave. I was wrong this day, yes I was. |

Hey, yeah...
So, um, wow.
Let me sort this out. While I was just out doing a bunch of stuff today, a large portion of which was playing games in some form or another, IC had an internet explosion and I got the copies of TGQ I ordered a long time ago in the mail.
I don't know what to think of all of this.
I certainly will miss IC if it is gone forever. Hell, my whole Master's thesis (pending approval) was birthed out of my thoughts from that Silent Hill thread where I wrote way too long responses to a guy who didn't really want to read them anyways. So (granted, not in the large way it has for Rud13), I guess IC changed me to some extent. It made me think a lot more about a hobby I have had since I was a kid. And it made me write a thing about Mega Man 2 and Metal Man.
Well, at least I have a bunch of stuff to read in the interim whilst things do whatever they are doing. Thanks, Shaper. |

honestly, as much as it sucks that the ic forums "as we knew them" are "gone," the whole dissolution process is ironically fitting for ic. contradictory, ironic, and, well, entertaining.

Man, it's hard to believe that a sight I read and a forum I participated in for, what, three years, may be gone forever. I mean, the games I found out about, the intelligent conversations, learning to write more than is needed especially when most of it has little to do with the topic at hand (actually that's only half true, Insert Credit just convinced me to write until I had nothing less to say if I wanted to, stuff word limits), and, despite my not posting much at all, the general atmosphere of the community.
I sort of feel bad being on the people who, you know, helped 'revolt' against icyclam, because it eventually lead to that 4chan bullshit.
Still. I will miss you Insert Credit forums. And, even more if it dies, Insert Credit. _________________ ... Maybe Later. |

It will take me a brief time to come up with the startup $$$, but hopefully not long. In the meantime, we can discuss planning and goals for the site as well as the forums.
Are you with me? |
Use the promo code TIMROGERS and you get $97 off the first year. That's $33 for a year of hosting which is pretty good. If neo-IC outgrows this, you're only out $33.
Dreamhost is good, I use Dreamhost, so does Anna, and I set Tim Rogers up with it too. People complain that dreamhost can't handle big sites, but you need to have a lot of uniques before that becomes a problem and I doubt IC would hit that number.
Also, now I have to stop posting here again ;_; |

You may have a future in journalism after all!! Just three more stamps on your RumorMonger Mart membership card and you can get an internship at a city newspaper!!
Thanks for reading my email thoroughly from start to finish when, under normal circumstances, it would be considered most polite to just look away and honor someone's privacy!!
Double thanks for bringing it up in a public discussion!!
You're going to make a terrific father someday!! |
Man, don't talk about privacy. Considering this particular email was about how a completely non-active member of the forum was telling another member of the forum that might as well be a troll were he not so damn smart about it how he was going to go about destroying something that many, many others had an emotional investment in, well, fuck. There's your "respecting privacy" right there. |
I can understand your emotional investment, and I can offer you my condolences, if you'd like, in a later reply.
Either way, Brandon has an emotional investment as well. It is indeed his website. He enjoyed it enough to work on it so hard he was able to get a job in videogame journalism. It is indeed his website. If there's something he doesn't like about it, he's entitled to change it. What you're perhaps missing is that this might be evidence of his commitment to turning his attention back to the site. To trying something else with it. We've just about finished implementing the PHP interface we're wanted to implement for years now. It's going to actually go up in a matter of days. insertcredit.com 2.0, it shall be called. Many things will change.
I own a computer for the first time in my life, for example. I was thinking of doing podcasts and other things.
Et cetera.
Putting icyclam in charge was, perhaps, yes, in a way, meant to scare off any people who would be scared off. the types of people to not sit up and listen. the types of people who wouldn't wonder what was happening. the types of people lacking in the courtesy it takes to offer someone you don't think you liked a second chance. If you had any "emotional investment" in a forum where people are often congratulated for being socially inept or generally jealous or spiteful, well, maybe you need to move your money to something else.
Also! I do believe icyclam wouldn't have minded it if you'd all have continued talking about videogames and whatever general things you talk about!! I know you all don't like being told what to do, and that's quite alright. You who overreacted: your overreactions are merely evidence of your disease.
Welcome to the club: we're all dying, here.
also, allow me to state once again that it was not icyclam who hacked / paid someone to hack the forums last time. _________________ www.largeprimenumbers.com

Can everyone stop bickering? We don't need to be assigning blame and instead we need to ask ourselves what the problem was. And no, saying that "Brandon is an idiot" isn't going to cut it.
I've got to go pick up a bed for my room. As someone who spent half of last night having people yell at me on IRC and the other half trying to explain all of this to Brandon, I'd like to see the discussion move in a more constructive direction.
For starters: if you really think that Brandon is entirely to blame for this, I have nothing else to say but you are wrong. Yes, making Icy an admin was a terrible idea, and I think Brandon realizes that this is true if for no other reason than the fact that the entire community was predisposed against him to start with. He could've behaved MUCH better than he did and still gotten the same amount of shit from people because he's Icy. I would've liked for him to take the high road but I guess I should've known better. In any case, thinking that the 4chan invasion was a direct and necessary result of Icy being mod is childish reasoning. It reminds me of how they'd interview people who cheat while playing Halo, and they actually blame Bungie for "letting them get away with it". It's the same logic here. My point is that while icyclam sucked pretty hard as a mod, nothing he did in any way justified the 4chan invasion. I mean seriously, the way some people were reacting at the time was as if it was actually a GOOD thing.
I'm running late now so I'll rant later. But I'd really like it if people tried to approach this whole disaster with a more constructive attitude. Let's try and not make this like the fucking French Revolution. _________________ where were you when nana komatsu got a wii? |
