The guy who runs tetrisconcept made a pretty cool Tetris DS time attack video.

NES Metroid in 11:45.

This runner plays as Samus out of her Power Suit. I always thought it was slightly creepy how the developers made Samus took suit off as your reward for beating the game, but at least you could say it was symbolic of the character's rebirth as a human being after overcoming the great adversary etc etc.

With this one, there's no excuse. She spends the whole game wearing a leotard and after saving the universe, strips down to her bra and panties and waves at you. It's wrong.

Then again maybe she's saying 'I'm going to bed now, goodnight!'

Wow. That Metroid run is amazing.

I have to say, I generally enjoy tool assisted runs more than regular ones. This one almost goes to far in terms of skipping Ridley, and a bit of save state abuse (going to the password screen seems a bit 'meta' to me, but still... it's like watching a fantabulous Samus Ninja.

full throttle edited into an hour-long movie. a really interesting project. it's not just the game's cutscenes played back-to-back, there's been a lot of editing to make it as watchable as possible: voice-overs, cuts, selective use of gameplay footage (check out the way the derby scene is patched together). it's an impressive undertaking, and possibly says a lot about the design of the game that i'm not going to go into because we luv you tim schafer here at the gamer's quarter.

I felt the same way about this Half Life 2 speedrun. It's done by various people from Half Life 2 Done Quick, and it abuses glitches like crazy. It's like watching a super-powered Gordon who can propel himself forward at incredible speeds faster than a car, and jump off of a tiny piece of wood over and over again while he's holding it, as if it's a portable levitating platform. HL2 speedruns always look so surreal.

It's also on archive.org as a single segment video.

That HL2 run is really amazing. I love the way the player shakes or nods his head during cutscenes too. And forcing NPCs on their paths by putting small objects in their faces.

I think this is a really cool thing. As a project, you know? This is what I was hoping for with that MGS3 movie. I like the idea of recording an "ideal" playthrough and making a movie out of it for narrative purposes.

I watched the Full Throttle movie too, and it really worked. The editor cut out a lot of stuff that could have been int here but slowed it down (excess fighting on the road, the cavefish part) but kept the main plot, and reminded me of how sweet that game really was.

Also: When I'm on the road, I'm indestructable. Nobody can stop me.....But they try.

Somebody want to try thier hand at Interstate '76? Wink

I am looking for a replay movie of Final Fantasy 8. I don't want to play the game right now (indeed, the last time I tried it wouldn't even work in my PS2), but I would be more than willing to sit through somebody's video of an entire playthrough. Preferably the video would include all the important dialogue and, of course, the cutscenes. World map travel and most battles could be omitted, I imagine.

Basically, I want someone who's done the work for me, so I can watch the story.

Does anyone know where I might be able to find something like this?

I wonder if a profitable business could exist whose sole purpose was to record and edit ideal performance playthroughs of games like this. Would people pay for the Full Throttle treatment in general? For long games with a lot of annoyances such as FFs? For more action-packed games that don't focus as much on story?

I wonder if interest in speed-run videos will start to shift towards the generation of narrative video.

I would love to do that for a living. Maybe you could work out some copyright arrangement with publishers similar to what strategy guide writers do.

so they haven't caught any major attention yet? christ, you fucking twit?

if I made a game, I'd refuse to let anyone do this. i'd want the game to be experienced as it was meant to be, not as a completely different medium. in conclusion, it's a stupid idea.

It's an expected but shortsighted objection. The content of any work can plausibly be translated to another medium with respectable results, but the nature of videogames makes them an interesting case. Because the game is inert without a player, every individual playthrough of a game represents a unique presentation of what it has to offer. It interests me that one could perform a videogame with this in mind and attempt to render an ideal experience. It's a form of role-playing, I think. We've already seen that performances emphasizing skill can be presented as worthwhile videos. Why should the same not be true for narrative and cinematic purposes? Skill videos do not replace the games in which they are made, so why would narrative videos?

Final Fantasy probably isn't a good example for this. Think of something like Ico instead.

Actually, I hate skill videos too. I watched the SMB3 one and now I just can't enjoy the game the same way I used to. Now stop getting all up in my grill.

Internisus, your paragraph about ideals was very interesting!

The thing is, that there are some games which are probably better to watch than play. I'd like to see edited (highlight) videos of Psychonauts and Shadow of the Colossus.

c64 longplays. it's a pity that few of the more interesting games on the platform are there, and instead there are walkthrough videos of arcade ports like arkanoid.

there is one of project firestart though!

I wanted to test out my new video camera; recording, connecting it to my computer, the whole bit. Around the same time, I was having this incredible urge to play Quake, as I get every few months—except I really wanted to play it on my television, with my sound setup, as I do all my other games.

So I hooked up my wife's iBook (the very one I'm typing on now!) and recorded a simple playthrough of a few levels. I really should have cranked the audio, though; it sounded creepy and beautiful and full of oomph in reality; here, it's a bit thin.

Anyway, here are the videos:
E1M1 and E1M2
E1M3

Enjoy! (I really hope this comes out for XBLA.)

Beyond Forbidden Forest looks so strange! More games need to end with the screen exploding and the protagonist flying into the sun. Paul Norman's music is great, too.

no-miss playthrough of metal black (saturn port). i had to download and install some divx web player to watch it.

metal black is one of the most emotionally gripping games i've played, and probably has the best soundtrack ever composed for a videogame. i'm probably going to write about it soon, actually.

dessgeega wrote:
it's called "appearance: patterns of uru" and it's pretty remarkable in that there's no actual gameplay footage in it. it's a short movie of scenes from the game set to music - and by scenes i mean places and spaces, shot from interesting angles. the movie is an attempt to capture not the gameplay but rather the symmetry and beauty of the crafted world the players explore and inhabit.

from another thread.

yes! the commentary can be grating, but it also contains lines like "arrgh! surprise fish! i hate surprise fish! and cat ball! i bet surprise fish and cat ball have tea together while they talk about killing my face!" and it does make the videos much, much easier to follow, as it otherwise would often be really unclear what was going on.

so the la-mulana walkthrough is now more or less complete. people who havn't seen this really should (mute the volume if you have to). it's a hidden game in la-mulana, a "dating sim", but just watch.

also, this person has been uploading super plays from the sega ages discs (the youtube clips contain links to the full versions on google video). there's one from gunstar heroes, one from wonder boy, and one from wonder boy in monster land. there are a few more videos on the discs; i havn't watched the uploaded ones so i don't know which ones they are.

i know all of you people are too cool for the la-mulana player's voice, but the hell temple videos are probably the best documentary of videogame-induced emotional breakdown i've ever witnessed.

this video isn't bad either.
