I figured this area would be at least as long as the last.

Goat-pushing minigame? I'm at the military base already, and I don't really recall any escort missions of any sort.

Am I playing it out of order?

EDIT: SHAPER!! The forums are busted and doing strange things with post times!

so contact is pretty much a dungeon crawl with an interesting (or more interestingly articulated) player-game relationship, where the professor is the game, terry is the protagonist, and the player is the medium through which they communicate. (like every video role-playing game that exists.)

it's cute, but i don't know if the gameplay is worth the time the game seems to be asking of me. i feel like i've played enough to "get it" and to continue i'd have to genuinely enjoy playing it. and i don't know that i do. (killer7 at least had the decency to be over as soon as you figured out its angle.)

hey, is there any way to avoid the rock boss's attack after it's lost its arms?

Yeah, it shows it's hand pretty early (going with the card theme). The rest of the game after the first level is the game showing you how clever and funny it can be. There may just be enough bursts of greatness for you to hold out though. I told you that you should have put God Hand on the list first.

Yes. Get out of attack mode to move faster. (If it is what I'm thinking it is)

i'd been doing that to avoid the punches, but the tiny fast things that leech your health and give it to the rock monster seem harder to avoid.

maybe.

i need to play the game some more. i've been playing things that are not it.

Just exit the battle mode and run along the bottom of the screen while they swoop down.

I should finish this game. All I want to play right now is FFXII, though.

so i finished that island, went to the next and completed the goat-pushing minigame (aka escort mission). i've decided a need to stick with the game at least as far as the military base. after that we'll see whether i want to keep playing.

I've been stuck on the escort mission for a little while.

This game is pretty terrible, aside from the packaging. I think I might put it up in the trading thread.

That area that you're holding out for has a couple genus moments in it.

i'm referring to leading the fellow and dog through the woods. i've heard some people refer to it as an "escort mission", or else they were talking about something else. i call it a goat-pushing minigame because most of what you do is push goats out of the way so they'll follow you, since their pathfinding routine is incredibly dumb.

i havn't played contact all day.

i feel like i should, but i can't muster the interest.

You can just kill the goats, you know.

Of course I can see why you wouldn't want to.

Keep playing it! There are worse ways to waste time!

And yeah I like this game a lot! I find it relaxing! Numbers go up with minimal effort on my part! It's almost like progress quest but with a better GUI!

I'm... only being maybe a quarter sarcastic!

i've finished ft. eagle.

rarely does a game so aggressively waste my time as does this one. i can feel the seconds of my life ticking away while i play it.

the thing with the screen was kind of clever, i guess?

andy's progress quest comparison is pretty apt. you push the b button, move up to an enemy, and watch icons pop up over terry's head showing which of his ten jillion stats have gone up. you do this until you can beat the next can't-run-away battle without having to spam all your precious health-up items.

there's no skill. there's barely any play. all you do is watch numbers go up. it's the worst kind of video rpg.

Oh right, that part. Yeah the goats are pretty bothersome, until I learned that fluffy friendly animals leave meat behind, especially if you use the Mr. Cuisine costume's Gut move on them. Since then I've, uh, been working on my cooking skills. A lot. I was hesitant to start down this path at first for fear that my karma or fame or something would go down if I took to the wholesale slaughter of native fauna.

Mister Toups, are you (or anyone else) doing a writeup about the game for the next issue? I'd kindof like to take a stab at articulating my feelings towards the game if nobody else has prior plans.

I was thinking about it but don't let that stop you. I think about writing lots of things but those things generally do not get written!

well, i've decided that i want to see the ending of contact. i'm going to do this they way i do other games i can't stand but want the experience of: hunker down and muscle my way through as quickly as possible.

currently i am at the earth wind and fire and water lock. i changed into my aqua suit and, sure enough, i need costumes. the only ones i had were water and cheffery, but i read something on another forum, and it got me the earth suit. that leaves wind and fire. someone please just tell me where to go.

i find it pretty annoying that i've found the thai curry recipe, went and gathered coconuts and rescued a spice dealer and when i try to cook the curry, it tells me "he can't make this yet". he can't prepare coffee yet either. what?

The most frustrating thing for me so far is how long it takes the ship to get anywhere. Is there any way to speed it up? I usually just set down my DS for six or seven minutes to go do something else.

Yeah, it's bullshit. Basically your cooking stat has to be at a certain level before you can do any of that.

You can sort of spam it by cooking meat or making potions (herb + bottle of water) but it really isn't worth it.

it's kind of lame that potions have any place in this game's food-based inventory.

also i think i liked the contact in my dream more that the real one.

aliens told my mind-controlled protagonist (who may or may not have still been terry) "that trick with the the screen was clever, but the real power lies in videotapes". "videotapes, of course! it's so simple - and so brilliant!" i thought as the aliens led maybe-terry to their secret lab where they were developing the newest and most effective distracting videotapes.

so habara was easily the most interesting thing the game has done so far - until it turned into another boring dungeon slog. even the gorgeous 8-bit wonderlands quickly became headache-inducing wars of attrition against unavoidable opponents. (tromping through a dungeon dressed up as a mall fighting slimes dressed up as cell phones made me realize why some people can't stand earthbound. i'm not sure i can either after all that.)

but the "boss" almost - almost! - made up for it. it felt like the game was finally starting to deliver on its premise! there better be more of that on castlevania island. i'm almost done!

p.s. the pyramid fight was like they tried to come up with another clever boss fight to fill their quota but ended up merely producing an unintelligible one. "what a mess!"

someone please tell me where to find a key.

i was fortunate enough to have "andrew mister" toups forewarn me about the fetch quest before the final island, but now there's this stupid door standing in my way of completing it.

help.

I admire how you guys have the tenacity to stick with games you don't like. I usually feel like I've 'played' the game after about an hour, and usually the only games that get any play after that are the ones I enjoy.

well, i finished it. the ending was almost clever, but still felt pretty hollow. that's my review of the game, in fact. at least it was short.

now i'm going to trade it in for a game that one actually plays.

Well, if you have played King's Field, or Eternal Ring you have an inkling of how this game plays. To begin with it does have two scenarios one of which is about a younger main character who gets sucked into this floating dungeon to find his family. The story is generic, yet captivating but no one is playing this game for it's amazing storytelling (which isn't that bad actually!)

It's the intgeral combination of using the stylus to attack/defend/and use magic in the dungeon. It feels primative in it's design aspects and corridor designs, as in DooM. However it is brilliant in it's variety of types and music! The music is lovely indeed and very nice. I wish I could say it better, but it's just really fun. REALLY FUN. And I don't ay that very often. Some maps are randomized as well as some secret pieces of equipment allowing for some "roguelike" subsuquent playthroughs. It's short, sweet, and to the point (about 8-10 hours).

The magic is visually impresssive, and combat is very easy (circle strafe, repeat) but enjoyable. Good stuff, I just don't have enough good things to say about it. Amen for shorter RPGs.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to Gears of War too, and I don't even own a 360 or a TV.

Still, I'm not convinced by the approach taken to the story, but it seems that even Cliff Bleszinski is aware of the territory and archetypes he's using, so there's potential for surprise. And hey, it's an Epic game after all: Muscle men are somewhat expected, and the original Unreal honestly surprised me in more ways than one.

You will be sorry!

Seriously though. Why are you getting rid of the system when it's been doing so many things right lately? FFXII, God Hand, Okami, Disgaea 2, Phantasy Star Universe, Guitar Hero 2, the list goes on and on. Plus, even if none of these are interesting - uhh, aren't you using gamefly? Isn't it nice to have the option open to get a PS2 game if one comes out that interests you?

because it's not mine, and i'm only borrowing it from someone who has guitar hero 2 pre-ordered?

i would probably rent god hand through gamefly otherwise, though i'm not interested in buying playstation titles anymore.

I'm pretty much deciding to go this way too. But I'm assuming that you're making the decision for THAT reason, like I am. Although I still can't decide if I should apply this reasoning to Sony Japan too. But yeah, it's not the games that aren't doin gthe right things.

I'm pretty much deciding to go this way too. But I'm assuming that you're making the decision for THAT reason, like I am.

well, that was just the last straw. i'm not going to pay for the privilege of having stores important to my community run out of business. i'm not planning on buying from sony japan either. there are two new taito collections coming out for the japanese playstation, but some things are just more important.

I can't deny that I've been getting irritated with Sony for quite a while too. I can remember thinking at their last ridiculous launch (well, the PS2) that they would learn lessons about a major system launch. Instead it looks like they've actually planned such a colossal clusterfuck to some degree. I assume by your mention of local businesses that you're talking about the allocation of PS3 units being heavily weighted to ginormous retailers, virtually locking out the smaller local folks?

For some reason I feel like Wes disagrees with this opinion, and I'm dying to hear his reasoning. But maybe I'm wrong. Wes?

I do disagree!

Not that I don't think Sony is fucking up. I do. I just don't think that their fuck-ups should have anything to do with your purchase of third party games for their system. Their fuck-ups are going to naturally bite them in the ass, without any help from people.

On the Launch
Their launch problems are more of an inconvenience than anything else. It's been said before that they're launching this year in name only, and that's absolutely true. They're launching this year in order to keep their shareholders happy. They're obviously not ready. Nobody thinks they are. Their launch games are mostly crap, their online infastructure seems thrown together, and the number of systems they can cobble together are incredibly low.

With that said, why does it matter to you? Sure it's going to piss off people who feel like they need to have the system, but something tells me you aren't those people. As soon as they said $600 you were out of the running anyway. The $600 system is a crazy risk, but it's a risk they're taking that has fuck all to do with how well you enjoy the PS2. Actually, it probably increases the value of the PS2 because it's insane for Sony to just drop support in favor of a system that will take at least two years to make its way into a high enough number of households to justify the development costs of the games on it.

On Lik-Sang
You do realize that you're defending a company that is run out of Hong Kong and was founded with the purpose of selling mod-chips to screw game creators out of their money, right? They got big enough using this dirty money to stay legit for a while, but the fact remains that they're pretty damn shady, and probably shouldn't have been around as long as they were.

But they're legit now, right? And they got screwed by Sony of Europe complaining about them selling their region-free PSPs to Europe, right? Guess what guys. The system is Region-Free because of Sony, not because of Lik-Sang. In fact, it seems like Sony is the only company making a region-free system a priority. Something tells me that this was a Sony of Japan/Sony of US decision that Sony of Europe had major Qualms with (since they stand to lose the most money from their overpricing of games for the European market), but couldn't do anything about since they're the third most-important.

In the end, Sony Europe ended up muscling a company founded on piracy money out of business. I fail to see what the problem is here.

On Locally Owned Businesses
Sony is not intentionally screwing over locally-owned businesses by short-shipping them systems. It's a fact that smaller businesses don't make as much money for Sony as bigger businesses do. I don't think there's any hidden agenda to screw over the little guy - there just isn't a lot of incentive to support the little guy. I'm guessing that distribution is based on percentages. Best Buy, Target, Wal-Mart, etc. make the most money for Sony, so it's obvious that they're going to get the higher number of systems.

It's the same reason Sony doesn't send TGQ review copies and doesn't really pay us any attention at E3. It's nothing personal, it just doesn't make sense for them to go out of their way to help us out when helping someone who has a bigger voice will make them more money. If we based our coverage entirely on who was willing to help us out we'd cover nothing but Nippon Ichi and Atlus games from now on. That's basically the equivalent of blaming Sony for not supporting locally owned businesses with launch systems.

On everything else.
Yes, Sony is making some bad decisions, but in the end the results of their bad decisions are enough to hurt them without artificially deciding to base your purchases on "evil Sony" propaganda.

It's like the conversation I had with Don Marco last night while playing PSO. I mentioned that the DS is probably my favorite system of all time. His response was "how can a system that has a revision within 12 months be the best system of all time?" This struck me as odd because the existance of a revision hadn't even crossed my mind. I hadn't separated the DS from the DS Lite because although one's a bit nicer than the other, they're essentially the exact same thing. The games and whether they've been worth the money and effort you've put into them should be the only thing that matters.

By this same token it's totally cool to not buy a PS3 because Sony's making it retardedly expensive. It's totally cool to not buy one because there aren't any games that you like on it. But it's not cool to not buy one because they muscled a shady, online, overpriced Hong Kong piracy/import company from which you never even bought games out of business when both Nintendo and Microsoft had already attempted to do the same thing a few years back.

We're not talking about a life or death situation. We're talking about videogames. Who protests video games?
