It's the most godawful thing you will ever taste in your life. You will die a much happier person having never tried it, and your life shall want for nothing.

I wonder what the difference between Vegemite and Marmite is, though; I could have sworn I've seen jars of Marmite on store shelves here a few times. So what's the deal with folate anyways?

Ok, I don't understand this ban at all.

"The (US) Food and Drug Administration doesn't allow the import of Vegemite simply because the recipe does have the addition of folic acid.''

Folic acid sounds like a good thing...

"In 1996, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published regulations requiring the addition of folic acid to enriched breads, cereals, flours, corn meals, pastas, rice, and other grain products."

I'm confused as shit.

Mmm.... Marmite...

The difference between Marmite and Vegemite is that the US likes Britain but hates Australia? I dunno.

Rent seeking?

Edit: seriously, I'm guessing bread and cereal companies lobbying for exclusivity for folic acid, standard anti-competitive rent seeking. Why else would these things happen?

Tomatoes were banned for a long time because of their relation to nightshade. I don't think that stopped anyone though.

Mmm, vegemite is damn tasty! I just had a huge piece of bread with vege for breakfast. Delicious! It's awesome too, because I've never met anyone from any other country who doesn't absolutely hate the taste. It's like the entire world is allied in its hatred of vegemite. I've given samples to Germans, Japanese and Britons, and they've either politely and excruciatingly slowly finished just that piece, or just outright and immediately refused to ever touch the stuff again. Australian taste for the win!

But yeah, that ban sounds pretty crazy..

Laco's right on the money. I've yet to meet anyone from outside this wide brown land who hasn't threatened to physically violate me if I feed them move vegemite, yet I gobble the stuff like it was candy.

Vegemite - it's made from crocodiles!*

I'm from Britain and I like Vegemite. It was sold on the store shelves here for a very brief period of time, but I guess the British public never.warmed to it.

Wiki says:
"In October 2006, the Melbourne Herald Sun reported that Vegemite is banned in the USA, with Customs officials going so far as to even search Australians for Vegemite when they enter the country,[1][2] but later reports cast doubt on the claim.[3] The Food and Drug Administration later stated there was no import ban on Vegemite, and that it was never pulled from American supermarket shelves.[4]"

FDA bans

That link works if pasted to the browser's address bar.

I had always thought of Vegemite as being a thick syrup/paste form of V8 juice.
Sort of appealing to me. I like V8.

Now I am suspicious.

malted V-8?

Sugar added to regular V8?

Not that I'd put it past a corp. to pull that.

I think you were referring to the "fusion" drinks.

Nope. Plain old V8; I noticed it a year or two ago (they'd also placed a Campbell's logo more prominently on the bottle, so I assumed it was a new acquisition/corporate rebranding). I can't actually remember if it was real sugar or high fructose corn syrup. I don't know how long it lasted, but I'm assuming the V8 market tends to be a vocal one, so they probably fixed things quickly.

Do you have a little cube-fridge?

Or just too many bodies?

Maybe just transfer the juice to a bunch of used bottles to make it fit.

I just remembered that tomatoes are technically fruit.
Since coffee beans are actually berries, perhaps a delicious blended fruit drink could be made: Tomato Espresso.

Mmmmmm, delicious.

Hey, so like, I finally ran across a very small (4.4oz) of Marmite! I'm excited, but how should I eat it? This is one of the most polarized food I know of and have been intrigued on what it tastes like for a long time.

EDIT: Also, Wikipedia says that this thread was based on lies!

"In October 2006, the Melbourne newspaper, the Herald Sun incorrectly reported that Vegemite had been banned in the United States, and that the United States Customs Service had gone so far as to search Australians entering the country for Vegemite. The story appears to have originated from an anecdote from a traveller who claimed to have been searched, and a spokesperson for Kraft who made a misinformed comment to reporters. The story led to some anti-American comments in blogs and newspapers. The Herald Sun blamed the US President for the ban, and encouraged readers to post comments on its website and send emails to the White House.

The US Food and Drug Administration later stated that although it is technically illegal in the US to add folate to food products other than bread or cereal, there were no plans to investigate whether Vegemite contains folate, to subject it to an import ban, or withdraw it from US supermarket shelves. The United States Customs and Border Protection also tried to dispel the rumour, stating on its website that "there is no known prohibition on the importation of Vegemite" and "there is no official policy within CBP targeting Vegemite for interception".[3] The story of the "ban" later took on the status of urban legend.[4] While Vegemite has never been popular in the U.S., it can still be purchased at supermarkets that stock imported food items.[5]"

On hot buttered toast. Then spread marmite on it. Start with just a small amount. Then add more and more as you go on.

If you don't like it at first, stick with it! A lot of people don't like olives the first time they have them, either! Also, coriander.

Marmite is the pasty red-headed cousin of Vegemite - more savoury and without the ball-punching bitterness. I wouldn't exercise as much caution as a Vegemite jar requires, but that's not to say you should dive in headfirst. I would suggest you acclimatise yourself to the taste by toasting some white bread, melting some butter/margarine into it, and then spreading a thin layer of Marmite over the top.

I've heard stories of some who melt it into boiling water and enjoy a delicious cup of the stuff, but frankly those people are batshit crazy.

Don't look Johnny, you'll make them nervous.

We have something over here called 'Bovril' with is basically Marmite made with beef instead of yeast, and they advertise that as being for drinking. Delicious on toast, too!

Ok, I tried it by taking 1 piece of bread, toasting it lightly, applying butter, then a thin layer of Marmite, and finally folding it in half (vertically).

It wasn't bad. It was kind of like eating a soy sauce butter sandwich. There where a couple of spots of intense salt that was nearly overwhelming. I'm not really sure if it was good or not. I'll have to try more I guess.

This is good! Try it without folding it though. You're doubling the intensity of each bite. It might be too much at your current power level!

I was actually really nervous about doing this because this means that more exposed Marmite would be touching my tongue :O

But it was pretty good! I had two pieces. It's kind of weird honestly. It's one of those things I wonder "who the hell thought this was a good idea in the first place"

This data says 20% of daily allowance, but I have one in front of me that says 29% on the can.

The " 100% Vegetable Juice " kind. (Both mine and the one with the data link.)

There are low salt versions.

I'd make it with none and include a little packet with salt, garlic powder, black pepper, onion powder, and chili powder or curry.

@ Harveyjames:

Toast is properly eaten with bacon. Lettuce and tomato optional.

@ Thread:

I'll bet vegemite was based on the idea of bouillon.

This is because the data is for 8 oz. of liquid and the can is 11.5 oz.

with creamy peanut butter and jam. put the peanut butter on while it's still really hot, so it gets all melty.

Also, nutella.

Yeah, but it's called Branston Pickle, GOD

The proper way to eat toast is to put butter on it when it's still hot and then spread on honey or chocolate spread or marmite, jam, marmalade, peanut butter. There also used to be a thing called cheese spread or cheddar spread but they discontinued that.

Then you eat it without FOLDING IT IN HALF, you bloody animals

Oh yeah, or you can cut it into soldiers (strips) and dip it in a hard boiled egg. This is also acceptable. Anything else is a grotesque bastardization of a fine tradition.

Guys Marmite is damn tasty. A british teacher I had in college introduced me to it, and was all like "this is the most vile concoction known to man if you have lived in America for more than 5 years" and then didn't believe me that I was all about it.
