...the reason for which will now become apparent.

So my wife and I have a new web comic:

http://www.webcomicsnation.com/dcconspiracy/tnv/

It's called Totally Not Vegan! and a new one will be up each Friday. So Dess, I know we have this thing in common (no, other than the Dig Dug thing) so I was hoping to hear what you think. But honestly, I seem to recall there being other veg*ns here, and veg*n sympathizers, so everybody, let us know what you think.

(Be a little gentle though-- even though we've worked in print this is our first web based thing. Nervous!)

Though no longer vegan, I still prefer soy milk.

I think that's a great idea. I'll post photos of me at Food Fight! getting the weird new Scottish vegan cheese they carry. And then getting a new tattoo next door at Scapegoat Tattoos, an all-vegan shop.

So gimme a link to your livejournal! I know your site, but I couldn't find the journal part.

Also, Alt. Outfitters is great! I got my wife a purse from them.

simplicio: sorry to hear you're no longer vegan, but I agree-- cow milk is far inferior to soy milk.

i'm not gonna direct-link it, but my livejournal name is the first taito title on this page!

i've never found any good vegan cheeses (not that i look much!) but i did recently find the first good vegan mac & cheese i've encountered so far!

I was really nervous but I'm glad you guys liked it.

By the way, we take submissions, in case aybody has any vegan horror stories. We've already received a few that we'll reveal in the next few weeks. You'll get credit for the idea and if you link to a photo I'll do my best to scribble a horrible shadow universe comic version of you.

This is an awesome concept for a comic! I'm looking forward to seeing more of it.

And yeah, soy milk rules. Also, vegan or not, soy dogs are way less disturbing than regular hot dogs. Still a bit too processed for my liking, though.

Thanks Six, glad you liked it. This week's strip
is up, by the way.

Both in relation to your mention of soy dogs and in reference to Dessgeega's vegan bragging comment, here in Port Land we have the Dog House, which serves five different kinds of veggie dogs! Dess, you should relocate!

Tofurkey Franks are not bad at all. I suspect that they are the ones served by the aforementioned Dog House. Granted I'm not an 'every day' sort of consumer of these things, but they are okay every now and then, even when not drunk.

I welcome any and all vegan horror stories for inclusion in TNV. If you want I'll even do a weird comics strip version of you to star in your own story. And it doesn't have to be three panel even-- this Friday's strip is one big panel.

I don't like hot dogs enough to like not dogs.

I'm fairly carnivorous, but I will say that the best restaurant in Athens is a vegetarian/vegan place! And one of my favorite 2 Atlanta restaurants is very vegan-friendly, too. So I don't feel too bad for jumping in on this thread.

The only vegan horror story I know of involves a bean burrito with no cheese that had cheese. Though they didn't notice until halfway through because it melted and didn't notice.

I have to say, I'm not vegan in the slightest (I mean, I live in Texas, come on), but vegan food is really, really good.

Please explain the 5 kind of veggie dogs in detail, if possible. Everytime I read this thread I get very hungry.

I question the wisdom of trying to emulate lunchmeat in the first place.

it is indeed unwise. vegan cooking is beest when it doesn't try to emulate things, because it can't emulate things. it can, however, do real good new things.

This thread makes me want to try veganism out for a bit. I might see if I could pull it off for a couple of weeks. Don't think my parents would support this one bit, but then again I don't eat at home often anymore because of work and my mom's always mad at me for stupid stuff anyway.

Yeah, I've been to Texas before and it was tough. Fortunately many (but not all I know) Asian restaurants have at least something.

Okay, 5 types (without driving to the place-- I'll try and remember):

regular
spicy
bratwurst
kielbasa

...and I can't remember the last kind at all.

Anyways, I'm sortof divided about vegan 'mock' stuff-- some is excellent while some is truly nasty. Some of it is too processed for my liking, but one of the best kinds, seitan, made from wheat gluten and that's about it, is really, really good, especially when you make it yourself.

As for trying to duplicate non-vegan dishes, I was non-vegan for like 25 years, and I came to like a lot of foods, not because they had meat or animal stuff in them, but because they were seasoned well or because they had a good texture-- texture is REALLY important to me in food. Cheese is a good example of this-- I like the saltiness and tang of vegan cheese, and I've actually found a brand, Veganrella, that's excellent melted on pizza.

Great, now I'M hungry.

health is wealth chicken-free nuggets are pretty good, though they switched to a non-vegan recipe for a while. they're vegan again now, so everything's cool.

Yeah, I've had those and they're tasty!

Another 'replacement' that's not a real replacement is Superburger (made by Turtle Island), a great, very well seasoned tempeh patty.

I just came back from my first vegan shopping trip. It was very eye-opening... I didn't know that there were so many substitutes for everything.

My mom actually thinks this is a really good idea. I need to eat healthy anyway because I've been having all kinds of nutritional problems due to my junk food heavy lifestyle and such (I'm really not overweight or anything, though, I'm actually very skinny). Apparently she even tried it a few years ago.

Just make sure you stay away from common vegan mistake #1: A life of pasta is not a balanced diet. You need protein, and the easiest ways to get it are tofu/soy products and regular old rice and beans.

also chocolate soy dream is the best milk substitute. and "soy cream" is amazing ice cream, if you can find it. tofutti is nutrasweet-injected shit.

hip whip is a pretty great whipped cream substitute. it even comes in those little spray cans now.

Also, once you get 'settled in' and acclimated to being vegan, expect to get boatloads of people asking you "you're vegan? so where do you get your protein?"

Oh, and I should weigh in on my frozen item of choice, eh? Well, aside from Hemp I Scream (non-dairy despite the name) which is local to Boulder, CO, I like Soy Delicious. We even got my non-vegan Mom to switch to it! Rice Dream is yummy but my wife claims that it's got a weird texture. But I like weird texture I tell her!

Rice Dream is riding high on the peak right before the uncanny milk valley that Silk is dipping in. It's good with cereal!

so I've got a little tale for y'all. I'm not sure if it fits in a 3-panel, but if it does feel free to have at it, friedchicken. My girlfriend and I went to dinner at an asian fusion place (why are these stories always asian places?) last night and split a dim-sum platter. there were two dumplings a piece of shrimp, lobster, chicken and vegetable. so she was going to have the three meaties and I'd get the veggies. The platter comes and we start trying to pick them apart to see which is which. the shrimp is easy, but the other three are mysterious, and quickly torn to shreds by our non-precision chopsticking. debate ensues: is that stringy bit chicken? lobster? or just steamed cabbage? I'm about to sample one, but she takes a bite first. No! Chicken!

The waiter sees our confusion and makes an appearance. "Oh no," he says when asked, obviously pleased with himself and the values of the establishment, "we didn't have vegetable; we gave you extra lobster instead."

Well, things are going alright with my Vegan Quest. It's a lot harder than I expected it to be and I didn't plan things out as well as I thought I had, but things are running a lot smoother than most of my friends thought they would.

This is amazing.

How else can we do this.

Game opens with a flashback told through black and white in-engine stills. A little boy is growing up on a small farm and he has a pet Deer (or other assorted fantasy animal). The deer (or fantasy animal) is taken by dad (giant sausage) and eaten. The little boy vows to never kill another living thing for the rest of his life.

Flash forward to today, the screen becomes color. The boy (now an angsty teen with blue hair) wakes up from his bed (late of course) and goes downstairs to find his father (giant sausage) cooking some bacon. The boy says, "I hate you dad!" and goes into the town square. The boy runs into a girl (with pink hair and HUGE eyes) who tells him that she is an orphan with magic powers. A talking dog tells them to fetch him some water from a nearby well. The boy and girl head toward the well together and out of nowhere a battle begins. They have been attacked by a squirrel. The battle menu appears and the options are "run", "run faster", "run away really fast." You choose "run," but can't get away. The squirrel hits the pink-haired girl for 5 damage. You choose "run away really fast," and get away.

That's all I've got so far. I assume after they get the water for the dog they find out that the father (giant sausage) has eaten it. More hatred abounds.

Well his dad was actually born as a magical kale, but became evil and twisted through the genetic engineering of shinmosantora corporation.

also, there needs to be a dude who laughs a lot and is evil, but really good at heart. and the scientist who thought his kale to sausage genetic engineering potion would only be used for good. (because growing up his mother died from a kale allergy and she really wanted sausage? i'm having a hard time figuring out how they write all this stuff without a serious pile of dope on hand.)

She can't have pink hair, the flashback is in black and white! Sorry, but logical consistency is critical here.

what you folks are describing is vegan fantasy. vegan quest is about honoring the memory of your father, a brave tofu dog who was tricked and murdered by the meat industry.

get your jrpg parodies right!
