Yes, though it's the Japanese version. In that photo it looks like... nothing at all, doesn't it? Not very iconic, anyway. |

I hate how so many games have no drive to them. I don't understand the fascination with games that start slowly, agonizingly. Role-playing games are often the worst offenders, requiring hours of your time before things get interesting. I think that sort of impenetrable learning curve is old hat; we shouldn't be seeing it anymore.

This article sums up some of the ways that games could be given more drive.
ie. end objective needs to be clear, sub-goals need to be obvious.
Which are some the reasons that Shadow of the Colossus works so well at setting out a clear scenario. |

Speaking of which, I'm the fastest at Multiplcation x(infinity) player out of everyone that I've played with. I attribute it to my childhood of academic brainwashing.
It'd be funny if there was a mini game where you shot at the professor's floating low-poly head in outer space ala Starfox. _________________

Random gaming thoughts time:
What excites me most about the DS and Wii is probably the same for most people; the potential for innovation, the simple-but-engaging gameplay, etc. I thought the other day: games like Hotel Dusk, Trauma Center, Wii Sports, and whatnot—these titles represent an interesting shift in how games can be played, and even perceived (a no-brainer, I understand).
This reminds me of when I was a kid, and all we had was an 8-bit NES ("we" meaning my collective sphere of influence). That was the extent of what could be done with a videogame, as far as we knew. Because of this, most concepts that seem very tired today were thrilling then, because we were experiencing them for the first time. Games like Ninja Gaiden, with its cruel difficulty and beautiful cut-scenes, were solid gold to me. Nowhere else could I enjoy the experience—no matter how crude it may have been—of being a badass ninja, and potentially be good at it. No amount of cheesy 80's ninja movies could replicate the feeling of wall-jumping and slashing with enough skill to impress my friends.
So now, with the DS and Wii, there's that potential for rediscovery. Where else but on in Trauma Center do I get to cut some mofo's up and pretend I'm a surgeon? Medical drama shows aren't exactly the same thing. Where but in Hotel Dusk (I hope) does one get the portable, interactive equivalent of a good crime thriller?
I feel like I'm eight again, because I keep thinking the same thing when I see upcoming DS and Wii offerings: I've always wanted to do that. And to me, that's the most important thing in gaming right now. |

It will I'm sure. Going back and finding decade old Acclaim code, modifying it, and then recompiling it would be near-impossible. Actually, I doubt any virtual console games will be changed at all.

What Wes said. Although it would be oddly awesome if Midway released an altered, non-censored version of SNES MK1 alongside MK: Armageddon for the Wii. As a sort of Nintendo-sponsored, 13-year apology. |

So, I was playing some SNES games on an emulator, on The Panda's iBook, hooked up to the TV and my home theatre system. The games ended up being a sort of watered-down-looking, decent approximation of the real thing.
But the more I tried to delve in my ROM catalogue for something to play, the more I realized I'm looking forward to the future of games (especially Wii) than I am to replaying past releases. I just couldn't get into a bunch of old titles as I used to.
I think part of it was that the presentation was less than admirable. I'm looking forward to the Virtual Console, because I've gotten use to ports and retro compilations, where the games look sharp and vivid, free of past hardware's limited video signals. If I am going to play an old title—I have yet to play Yoshi's Island, for example—I want it to look as good as possible. I still really love SFC Street Fighter II Turbo, but even with my decent AV setup, the ol' grey beast doesn't output the nicest image I know the game can look better than that. (Just like Shaper's photo of Rondo of Blood running on his laptop looks a lot better than the shot of it running on the actual hardware!)
Anyway, I'm just rambling. When the fuck is the reprint shipment of Trauma Centre coming out? |

You need an HDTV with VGA input:

Cave Story through VGA. Perfect. Mame is perfect. Retro consoles are perfect. Plus I have a wireless PS2 controller for them all.

Hey, look at that—Trauma Centre's back on the shelves!
Today I almost lost my mind and killed a person. There are occasional moments when I completely lose control and cannot contain my anger. Yesterday was one of those moments, when I went to sign off a sample at the printer and realized they fucked up again. I was livid with anger, at the constant, slow, back-and-forth the process of (sshh) printing a second Empty Words book has become. After reprimanding the printer and his wife, and giving them precise instructions, I stormed out of their shop, unable to withhold a string of expletives.
Today I encountered similar impidements to my deadline, and nearly had a heart attack in a single moment. I transitioned from a happy state of calm to blustering rage and almost let loose a second barrage of four-letter words on the phone when the printer's wife told me she didn't receive the file I had sent her.
Luckily, I had planned for her incompetence and brought a copy with me. Marching into the shop with the Panda, I had her print a sample right then and there. She could see the look on my face, which hovered somewhere near Falling Down levels of madness. A few minutes later, I had a new sample to approve, which thankfully—finally—was correct. On Tuesday, everything will be done, and their lives will be spared.
I was originally going to spread the word about them, but despite my satisfaction for the actual quality of their printing, I'm holding off. They'll have to re-earn that, and I don't know when I'll give them the chance again. |

Falling Down is one of my all time favorite movies. Well, it use to be anyways. The film is set up like a videogame: Kill boss, get weapon. Kill next boss, get better weapon. _________________ “The average man has a secret desire to be a swaggering, drunken, fighting, raping swashbuckler.”

I marched to a videogame store today with my wife, 100% intent on purchasing an Xbox 360. Of course, the place had closed by the time I got there, to spite me. Now I'm somewhere around 60% determined to get one. It was going to be an impulse purchase. I always feel guilty about these, and almost never actually proceed with them.
Tomorrow I'm meeting my tutor. Our usual meeting place is dangerously close to my favourite videogame store—we're talking a matter of metres here. I may, before meeting her, march into this store and purchase an Xbox 360. Then again, if they don't have the PGR pack (with the 3 months of free XBL Gold), I may have to go elsewhere.
Question for all of you who own said box: can I play any games online with the standard Silver membership? Can I play, say, Street Fighter II online? Halo 2? Advice is appreciated. |

I just got the 360 last week. I haven't played it much, but I did play online for the first time today.
I only have a silver membership, but you can still play games from the Xbox Live Arcade. This means Street Fighter too, and it's surprisingly fun online. You still have to pay for the game itself, which isn't too bad but still mildly annoying. I don't think you can play anything else other than what's in the arcade though with a silver membership, but I'm not entirely sure on this.
Initially I thought, "NO NO I DON'T WANT A 360 NO" but the PS3 is looking worse and worse, so now I'm thinking that eventually the 360 will definitely be worth it. |

Note that you don't need Gold to play MMOs. You need silver plus whatever fee that you pay to the MMO provider. For example, you can play FFXI with a silver membership. You just have to pay your ducats to SQUARE/enix.
You do typically get a free month of Live Gold when you sign up for Silver though (or at least, you're offered it). BC games do not understand what Silver is at all, you need Gold to use live features in BC games.
Oh yeah, you can also use a regular Xbox live card to subscribe to Xbox Live Gold. You can get normal live cards at significant discounts in retail stores and on Amazon/Ebay. _________________ Gamertag - FalcomAdol -- Don't Click Here 触手
