It is essential that we revise our chauvinistic priorities and produce games catering to girls because we have to be pro-active or something!

Whatever, I got a FEMALE OF THE SPECIES (i.e. girl lol) to try out Thief recently because she liked the plot (wow!) and the cutscenes.

I don't know. Maybe girls like to play fun things???

i like this point but it leaves out a more interesting one: such tactics are insulting to the demographic it presumes to cater to.

there's probably a devo quote in here somewhere that explains it better.

Male game article writers care a lot.

i've never played tomb raider. but she's a good (my current draft says "archetypical") example of the kind of image my piece is trying to interrogate.

I absolutely LOVED the two good Indiana Jones movies as a wee child, as well as the awesome graphical adventure game for The Last Crusade that Lucasarts put together back when they were still LucasFilm games. The premise always appealed to me, but I never played Tomb Raider because it felt just TOO derivative. It was like an Indiana Jones game (and apparently not that good of one) which replaced Harrison Ford with boobs. Which I suppose works for some people.

And the way to appeal to girls in games and game articles is to increace the amount of chocolate-chip cookies present. I am not a girl, and even I am excited about finding chocolate chip cookies in articles I read!

The link doesn't work, btw.

we don't actually ever write about "girls in games". men do. and they're required to be as patronizing as possible.

i'm just writing about how much i hate the phrase "girl power".

d000000d temple of doom is so much better than crusade, except for the line "he's in the belly of the steel beast!"

Temple of Doom boasts brilliant set pieces but the most annoying sidekick and female leads ever.

I generally dislike girl gamer websites. It's incredibly distracting and annoying when reviews have to have a paragraph about why something empowers women more.

I also think that Fragdolls are the most retarded thing ever.

Well, except for that one unprintable submission we got that really wasn't much better.

I like the analysis of Leisure Suit Larry in this article.

Dude. You're not supposed to talk about contributor pieces in the public forums! Even worse than the submission we recieved was the girl gamer article that ran in the Escapist. I can't believe they put it in their "best of" issue... (I'd like to point out that we're now ragging on both our contributors and our "competition" in the same thread! Woe is me.)

Anyway, I think the article linked to above is supposed to be satirical. As satire I think it ain't too shabby!

Sorry, it was just the example that occurred to me, of a piece written by a woman which fell into many of the traps outlined in this article. (That particular submission had some good ideas, but AFAIK we never heard back from the submitter about fleshing them out. Just to make it clear that I'm not trying to rag on our contributors. Please, submit things! We are constructive in our criticism!)

And yes, the article is quite good. It's especially nice that he takes the time to bring up constructive examples of strong female characters, woman game designers, videogames that handle sexuality intelligently, etc, rather than just saying "HERE ARE A BUNCH OF DUMB THINGS STOOPID PEOPLE WRITE ABOUT".

I always seperate the Indy movies into two categories: The first and third films are like the bookends to his story, with the first being our introduction to his method of archeaology, the third being his final adventure (even though I hear they've started filming a fourth movie), and the second being one of his more stranger and hair raising adventures.

Myself, I really enjoy all three of them on their own as just good summer popcorn movies.

And Short Round is awesome. "No time for love, Doctor Jones!"

I'm sorry, but I have to side with Mr. Mechanical on this one. Sure, the female lead was annoying, but Short Round was possibly the best sidekick in an Indy movie. If only he had been in Last Crusade...

And am I the only one who thinks that the whole issue of "girls playing games" is one artificially created and inflated by the media as a whole? I mean, I know plenty of female gamers in real life, and they all run the gamut from hardcore to casual, same as the menfolk. It just seems like the media gets a little overeager to target and even single out the 'girl gamers' like they're some sort of rare species of prehistoric catfish (not saying that girls are like that at all, but there is this one ex I have...) which, as many people already pointed out, opens the gateway for quite a few writers to make asses of themselves trying to understand this mysterious creature.

the contrast with fully-armored samus makes her a particularly interesting example.

Ugh, that's pretty bad. I keep thinking that it's about time that someone started marketing real games in a non-condescending manner to women (atlthough I could probably argue that marketing to women in general shouldn't be essentially different from marketing to men), and then shit like this comes along. I'll email my wife the link-- she'll cringe, guaranteed!

It's hard to always be the devil's advocate, but my 6 year old Niece has really been digging the DS lately, and the only games that she's interested in playing are Cooking Mama and Super Princess Peach. She wasn't even interested in Clubhouse games even though we always play dots and lines together.

I think the "girl games" thing is more a problem with living in a society where girls are told to like things that are made for them. Since we live in that society, marketers are forced to adjust.

It'd be nice if I could convince my niece that BRATZ isn't as good as Kirby, but she's more interested in what seems like something she might like than something she might actually like.

In summary: we should breed Elitists.

Well, you're right Wes, but it's something of a chicken and egg thing here, since it's ultimately marketing (among other things) that tells women what they should want to buy. Fortunately it doesn't always take.

This is a fairly innocuous example of something that's pretty gross.

and i mean, no matter how technically excellent something might be, it can be hard to like it if it's dressed up to appeal to someone with completely different values than you. i remember someone on shmups.com telling me i shouldn't play videogames because i just couldn't get interested in mushihimesama because the game kept forcing me to look up a schoolgirl's skirt. mushi might be brilliant but i'll never know because i can't stand that shit.

It's nice to know they weren't guarding then the strawberry shortcake license so adamantly for nothing.

Mushihimesama is for shooter nerds only, anyhow. And it looks horrible in scaled mode.
