Hmm! I guess I was wrong then, but your avatar looks very similar to the NGPC Rugal from KOF.

It does? Can you show me it? All I was trying to do with that character was get a chunky platform-style sprite in under 32 pixels high with easily seen facial details in only 3 colors plau 1 transparency as per the Mode 1 resolution restrictions on the CPC computer. (the final sprite is actually based on two previous sprites I had done a while back, sorta took what I liked best from each one). Come to think of it I guess it is a lil Neo Geo Pocket beat 'em up style.

EDIT: Just found a Rugal sprite, and apart from low color count and the child like proportions I don't think he looks too similar to mine. He's 48 pixels high too whereas my sprite is barely 32.

This here's an early lil banner of my game
As you can see it doesn't really show much actual gameplay action going on yet but it's a hack n' slash exploration with a lil story.

The wall tiles in the second preview bit are based heavily on a tile from Castlevania - Circle of the Moon on GBA. I did that mainly to see if I could get the effect I wanted in such a low color mode. Turns out I could. I doubt that particular tile will be in the final game. And for anyone unfamiliar with the Mode 1 resolution on CPC it allowed 320x200 pixels but only 4 colors chosen out of a 27 color palette (this is the mode that meant the CPC got a lot of lazy Spectrum ports, whereas the Mode 0 resolution was the wide pixel 16 color mode similar to a lot of C64 games). However those 4 colors can change at any time which I'm gonna have everytime you flick to a different room, picking a color scheme best suited to the enviroment.

Actually, I tried looking for one but couldn't find any. The closest I came was from the game ending section of KOF R-2 from VG Museum. Which... is not quite right. After looking there I guess your sprite has a bit more detail.

EDIT: Yea, it is just similar enough for me to notice it I guess. It is mainly in the face and hair that I noticed it. Though really... I mean, yours is much better now that I have seen the real sprite.

Thanks. It's quite different in technique though. They get a lil extra room to show fingers and muscles and everything with a decent lineart. I dont have as much space (I could get away with it if I was able to use more color and use various tones) so I'm mainly focusing on light and shadows to give volume and shape with lil details added. And trying to make sure it still stands out against backgrounds that use the same colors.

I really love some of these random banner choices. The Outfoxies one made me grin but to see Gungrave as well? I love that game on my PS2. Noisy and repetitve? Yup... I love it anyways.

You should make some! I am glad people like them, I really enjoyed the concept when I thought of it and now with all the forum member support it has grown into its own thing that is better than I imagined. And the Gungrave banner is mine, I deeply love the game against what ever anyone else says.

Well, here's as good a place as any to start, I'd say.

As a sporadic contributor to the shmups forum (where my somewhat extravagant handle was born), the names of Shapermc and Randorama (among others) are familiar to me already, but I lack the forum experience of most of you chaps, it seems.

I'm something of a late arrival, but I've now bought copies of issues 3 and 4 after reading the first two online. Rather impressed, I was, so the logical next step was to register and show a bit of support. Like most people here, I assume, I've long held the belief that games can be approached from a more personal, thoughtful angle, and have despaired at the typical fare served up by game journos (aside from Super Play's Zy Nicholson, who was an early inspiration for me). I'm really encouraged by the discussions I've lurked in so far, and hope I can contribute something of interest, too.

Time for some bonus biography! My name's Jon, I'm 24, and I'm currently rediscovering gaming back in my home country of Wales, after drifting away from it while living in Japan and London. As a result, I'm now well placed to report on the 'non existent' or 'middle-of-nowhere' gaming scenes. My favourite game to play might be Super Mario Kart, while my favourite game to think/write about (possibly while wearing a black polar neck sweater and stroking my chin in a contemplative manner) would be Elite on the NES.

I also make fair-to middling electronic music, mostly ambient drum and bass, and I'm currently reading The Tale of Genji, of all things. Oh, and I'm stuck on Ico at the moment, which is annoying me no end.

Most of my family heritage is from Wales. In fact, I was once asked by a train steward if I were of eastern European decent and then went on to guess Wales. Who knew?!

Funny you should mention that, a couple of people have asked me if I was Polish (?). Goodness knows why...
Anyway, I've more commonly been mistaken (by non-Brits) as Spanish or Italian (I blame the big eyebrows, personally), so it seems like I'm a crazy European mish-mash to look at....

Easern European?
Like, they asked "Eastern Europe?" you said "No" and they said "Wales?"

I'm a European mutt myself, half German and the other half a mix of English Irish and Welch.

I missed this thread on my way in, so I figure I might as well make a belated introductory post.

I came across the site... somewhere back around issue 1 or 2, and I've enjoyed the magazine pretty thoroughly ever since. I've mostly been playing the same sort of games as of late that TGQ talks about - console games, jRPGs, 16-bit era titles, etc. - but really, my first love is PC gaming, so I tend to be more devoted to classic PC titles than the 16/32-bit games, which is pretty obvious from my top three: Thief, Fallout, and Freespace. I've also played about 50% of the point-and-click adventure titles released in recent years, which isn't really something that I'm proud of, and I have a somewhat guilty love of futuristic sports titles, even though I can't stand realistic ones.

Also, as a computer scientist in training, my grammar can be pretty horrible at times. I think it's an unfortunate side effect of learning Perl.

If memory serves, even the in-game graphics were a bit mindblowing at the time, A lovely bit of photorealism... I think they were able to take advantage of the staticness of the backgrounds, and the relative ease of illustrating a cockroach.

But I think that memory is just from the demo that came out at the time.

I have the Bad Mojo re-release. I haven't played the game much, because the 5-life limitation pisses me off, but the bonus DVD that comes with it is fantastic.

I took the liberty of ripping one of the most disturbing sections and throwing it on YouTube, but the whole thing is totally worth seeing. The entire production was a glorious, dysfunctional trainwreck.

Hello. Most of you know me. I'm here because Shaper twisted my arm (although to be fair, I kinda walked into it.)

I'm reasonably sure I called myself "SuperWes" twenty years ago while wearing a Superman costume my mom made for me (looking VERY MUCH as I do in my avatar), but I'm not one to hold a grudge.

Dude. I'm the real SuperWes. Don't make me bust out my obnoxiousgloves and turn into DoubleYewandDoubleYew, then write articles about my abusive dad and past relationships while racking up millions of dollars.

God, why am I posting this. It's been a long week.

Tuesday is not normally a day to say "It's been a long week."

I'm not saying you're not "the real SuperWes". Just, maybe, that you're not trying hard enough...

At the same time, I must admit that I have heard reports of the independent use of "westacular" from others named Wes, although all google hits on the term are traceable to me... except for a few that involve this one guy on myspace who goes by "WEStacular" but is most definitely not a westacular sort of person.

SO, the real squinty-eyed question is: Is this forum big enough for the two of us?

That's beside the point. He can be both of our Banes.

I'm trying extremely hard to live up to the SuperWes expectations/requirements. Do a google Image search for SuperWes. It's all me baby. All 2120 images. All me (or at least, most of them, who's got the time to search through that many images?!).

Do a Google Image search for Westacular. I'll admit that it's all you. But there are only two images, and one of them is of a Child Molester comic. It also clearly attempts to replace "Westacular" with "Testicular," which, I'll admit is pretty cool, but also pretty gross.

Clearly one of us is doing something right...

Well, you make Google want to "SuperLaugh" like it's some sort of SuperJoke.

Ok, so I haven't got around to posting [m]any of my thousands of photographs online. Meanwhile, what do we have here?

Is it a bird? Or a plane? No, it's another

...and some pictures of a guitar.

Well, that guy at least seems more super and westacular than the one on myspace.

Actually, I was talking about the myspace-westacular, who I now realize only has the name displayed as westacular as there's someone else who has the actual username.

Wow, myspace is like the sewer of the Internet.

So do you think my domination over the SuperWes name on the internet has these people upset? I mean, I'm basically just parking the SuperWes domain at livejournal and on blogspot.

So do you think my domination over the SuperWes name on the internet has these people upset? I mean, I'm basically just parking the SuperWes domain at livejournal and on blogspot.

First come, first serve. I don't think they're overly concerned with controlling the SuperWes brand.

Ok, just to make sure I have the right Shapermc.

Were you in my old Mask of Nyarlathotep game on EN World a few years back?

Yea, we made a pretty nice name for ourselves with this magazine.

Man, is that really crappy website I put together for the game still up?

Do you still have the link to that thread? That would be pretty neat actually.

Also, good to see that the family is still doing well. My wife and I still don't have any kids, but she is almost done with school, so I am going to be starting myself soon. So no kids in the near future either. But it seems like a lot of people around me are.

Hello! My name is Stephen. I am going to tell you about the best thing I ever found in the garbage.

This was probably seven or eight years ago. Walking home one evening, we found it by the side of the road and took it with us.

It was a TurboGrafx-16, with two controllers. There was a game inside. The controllers only worked when the cables were held at a certain angle. My brother and I concocted an elaborate setup that would hold the cables down and let us play (mostly) unfettered. Mishaps still occurred; scrambles ensued to right the cables before both of us died. The game was called Dungeon Explorer, and we loved it.

Later, I lent the TurboGrafx to a friend. We grew apart, and I never saw it again. I don't think he ever played it.

Sometimes, I cry out for it in the night.

The second-best thing I ever found in the garbage was one of those student chairs with the writing surface attached to the arm, with a pair of skis beside it. This winter, I plan to tie the skis to the chair and ride it down a hill.

I would say more about myself, but I just ate two Veggie Dogs without even bothering to heat them up, and I guess I'm kind of feeling sorry for myself. I like games, though?

(P.S. I kind of lied up there. I don't think I actually was there when it was found. I think it was my brother and his friend, whose brother was also a friend of my old best friend, while they were on their way over. This is why this bit is parenthisized. I hope it doesn't ruin my story for you.)
