The fuck?!

Okay, so my first assignment for my critical analysis class is to write a three-page analysis on a game of my choice. I decided to do Invader, because it's relatively short and modestly artsy and, because it's an indie game, I'll look cool and my tutors will be FORCED to play it before they can mark my work.

I played it through a few times when it first came out, right? Then I moved it onto my external hard drive, into the "freeware games to push onto people" folder. Rather than fuss about with wires to get this drive plugged in and running, I decided this morning to just download the latest version of Invader and play that.

Evidently, it remembered my system data from last time, or something, because it gave me the bonus game options right from the off. HOWEVER! When I tried to start a new game, it gave me some weird error, and spawned Sammie off in the top-left corner of the screen. This was somewhat irritating, but the REAL problem came when I plugged my external HD back in and found that even the original version of the game won't work anymore!

Is there some simple way to remove all of the save data stuff from my system? It's not urgent - I can just play it on another computer - but I'd like to get it sorted out.

just delete the "gamedata" file.

and show me the paper when you're done!

Well that's just it - my gamedata file wasn't anywhere on my hard drive when I started getting errors.

Unless it was, and I've just not been paying attention...

I'll look through my Folders o' Randomness and see if my old copy turns up!

Edit: I can't see it anywhere. But, like, it just seemed to KNOW that I'd already finished the game, you know? It's not a problem with the download (per se) because I stuck it on one of the lab computers last night and it worked perfectly.

I'd say it might be something to do with my version of DirectX or something, except I'm sure mine's up-to-date and it still wouldn't explain how it knows to offer my laser mode and suchlike. It must be pulling some kind of saved data from somewhere other than the gamedata file, surely?

that's bizarre. it's only supposed to read from the gamedata file. i only programmed it to read from the gamedata file.

UNLESS!

It may be so hideously confused by my computer these days that it can't even remember to hide the bonus modes?

Maybe some files got stowed away in a secret Windows pocket? Maybe there are some weird registry settings?
