Oh yeah, I think I heard about this. FEMA decided that since they can't protect people from hurricanes, they're going to use their money to make sure people are healthy enough to swim.
Seriously, though. If they want kids to be healthier they should stop putting snack machines in schools and to stop allowing companies to come in and give out free stuff. I'm not saying we should ban snacks forever, but kids are at an age where their opinions about things can change rather quickly and if America really does have an obesity problem we have to start fighting it earlier. We can't allow kids to sit at home watching a TV that says "you need our items to be happy!" and then tell them 8 years later that it's just a lie. |

I remember a game when I was like, oh, 5 or 6 in the late 80's that was a lot like Burger Time. I think it was called "Let's Diet!" and the whole premise was that you collected veggies and healthy snacks while fighting cake and sweets.
But I'm with Tollmaster. While this is a nice- and innovative- step, the real problem is the mixed messages we send to kids. "EAT HEALTHY THE SODA MACHINE IS ON YOUR RIGHT". You could make the case that this is an exstension of underfunded schools, but that's an argument for another post, I think. |

i would say it has a lot to do with commercialism too. high school students are a valuable demographic for them big soda companies! _________________

Oh, no doubt. But the reason schools are so complicit is because they're cash strapped. Faced with the prospect of having no books for the following school year OR books and a few soda machines/banners, it's a hard choice to make. I certainly resent commercial influences in public education, but schools are frequently underfunded. What to do? |

I'm with you there. Apparently, it would cost 1/100th of this administration's 4-year defense expenses to bring every school in the United States up to par. However, I know that the problem sometimes lies within a district itself. My mother works in an inner city school (As the nurse) and they got a 6 million dollar grant for being, well, poor. The higher-ups all took vacations, then bankrolled some program that doesn't work (But is run by the superintendent's nephew) and then squandered the rest. There needs to some oversight. |
