I tried playing on Kaillera once, with Gens. It... just plain didn't work. The default server list that the Kaillera client connects to is down for the count; you have to use this instead. I was able to connect and start a game, and then... nothing would happen. It just hung.

Then I tried Kega Fusion's built-in netplay, which actually worked, and had a nice round of Contra: Hard Corps with a friend back in Winnipeg.

Maybe Kaillera MAME works better. I'm pretty sure people use it successfully, so it's probably Gens' fault. I also know that it's painful to try and find a reasonably up-to-date version of MAME with Kaillera support, and it doesn't necessarily work well with everything. I haven't actually tried it, though.

I used to play, but for some reason it hasn't worked very well lately. I get lots of lag, and that kind of sucks.

I have never had any luck running those online emulators on my PC. If there are any experts out there with some advice on actually enjoying those services please lend us your advice!

Thankfully 3rd Strike on Xbox runs pretty nice. Along with a few other 2d fighters on the system is where I spend most of my time when I have only an hour to burn on gaming (or have had a bad day). 3rd Strike and Outrun alone justify the price of an Xbox to me. All I hope is that I can continue to use Live on my monolithic Xbox even with the X360 out now for at least a couple more years (Since I don't plan on getting a X360 anytime soon).

I don't think Kaillera really exists. I've never had any luck getting a game going through MAME or Gens, be it with an opponent on the other side of the country or the guy in the dorm across from mine in the on-campus days. I have yet to meet a real, live person--who I can certify is not a robot--that has ever had it work for them.

Oh shit, I just got a brilliant idea.
  • Grab the latest version of WinVICE (1.19). It has experimental netplay support, which has got to be better than the imaginary netplay support of Kaillera. It connects on port 6502 -- how adorable is that?
  • Download M.U.L.E..
  • Play it with me!

I've been wanting to try M.U.L.E. since basically forever, but I don't have anyone to play it with. Bug me on AIM and make it happen!

I used to use Kaillera pretty regularly, both across the web and across a network. Over web, it'd rarely work long enough to finish anything of significant length (The Capcom DnD game, the old Spiderman sidescroller. Sunset Riders), but for shoter games or things with VS modes, it was okay. Across a network, it was a little more reliable but not by much. Still got a lot of drops and set up was a pain. This going back 2-3 years, so maybe the whole thing has tanked in the interim. Are there any good Mac equivalents?

SNES9X has netplay, but i think the computers have to be right next to each other or something like that. I hear there's no lag compensation whatsoever.
