The next time you sit down to play Yar's Revenge, listen to your inner monologue. Chances are, it's telling you that what you are playing is a classic game, which is actually very good, and not monotonous at all. If you listen closely enough, you realize that it's just your inner monologue, and that the rest of you is having a somewhat different reaction.

You would do well to have the good sense to wonder why that is.

People complained about the time limit in Pikmin. The time limit isn't really its problem, though. It's the introduction that's the issue. Waiting a few days before the game tells you, hey, maybe I don't need all the parts to limp home. Having to find the radar to have parts show up on the map. There's no good reason to have put in the initial feeling of hopelessness, the oh-shit-what-if-I-fail, when the game is designed to make you gain confidence so quickly.

Thesis: Mike Tyson's Punch-Out is both directly comparable, and demonstratably superior, to Parappa the Rapper.

better yet, force them to write for the gamer's quarter. after all, this format invests in the whole being 7 and playing games thing nostalgia...what's more new games journalism than finding an actual seven year old and making them write about playing games?

Woah.

I just had a "Holy shit, people, it's just videogames" moment.

Reading flamewars about the new Nintendo controller all morning will do that to you. Still. It's crazy and wonderful just how much meaning we can put on the most arbitrary of things. I mean, what is the thing, really? It's a gadget. Similar gadgets exist, just now someone's putting it into a box with some videogames.

Yet, because it's Nintendo, because it's videogames, because there is a history and a community, because it's a change in the standard order of things, because there is a growing schizm in gamer culture, it becomes a serious disruption, a catastrophic event. It means something monumental to people.

The process is really kind of fascinating, if you shift your perspective to observe it.

I know!

Crazier still is the fact that my wife moved out there just over two weeks ago, not knowing when I would find a job (as I have been looking for months and months) and be able to join her. Sooner than we thought, is when!

So! Are there any TGQ forumites living in the Vancouver or Seattle area? Because that would be pretty awesome.

I have a friend who moved out to the Seattle area after the hurricane. I have not really heard from him in a while though.

As I understand it, the new place is a bit cozy -- we probably don't have a lot of room right now for guests to stay the night. (We got rid of our futon, and I don't know how much clear floor space there is to spread out a sleeping bag. Then again, I haven't seen the place yet, and there's still a lot of unpacking to be done.)

Other than that little caveat, hell yes.

Oh, we'd find our own lodgings. I just want a door to knock on in a city where I know two people at the most. I wasn't trying to invite myself over, although I realize now that's what it sounded like. Sorry 'bout that!

Nah, man, I put that in there because I would've totally offered a place to crash if we had it, not because I thought that's necessarily what you were asking.

(Damn, us Canadians are polite.)

The next Ludum Dare 48-hour game programming competition starts in a mere 5 and a half hours! I only found out like an hour ago, and I was like "OH MAN, I HAD THINGS TO DO THIS WEEKEND."

Convince me to enter! For great justice!

Aw, I missed it!

I try to make at least a token effort.

Anyway, it's kind of a good concept. I'm tempted to make something similar. The narration is a bit much though, there's a lot of popping!

ATTENTION WASHINGTON-STATE-AREA PEOPLES:
I am going to be in the Seattle / Bellevue area from March 18 - March 20th for a jorb interview / scoping out the neighbourhood. If you exist in this area, we should totally meet up! I'll bring my flashcart and yarred copy of Band Bros and we can jam with 8-way DS download play or whatever.

It will be great! So long as I'm not hallucinating and in fact NO ONE LIVES IN SEATTLE EITHER. If this is true I will cry.

Well, I guess that means that no one lives in Seattle. That means it's crying in the bathtub in a suit for me!

Also: it's my birthday today.

I am listening to the Dune soundtrack right now, and it is pretty much the best music the Adlib was capable of producing.
