I've always thought of LttP as an urban exploration game, whereas the original Zelda is more of a landscape exploration game. The 3D games aren't really exploration games at all.

Don't fear the hacked firmwares! Most of them are much better than the original one. The only danger is in the installation, but if you have fresh batteries, you should be fine.
